What does the saying on the last slide mean to you? FOR THE YOUNG IT IS BOUNDLESS – FOR THE OLD IT IS FLEETING Does our age determine, to some extent, how we view the concept of the time in our lives? If so, how?
How is stress related to the differing views of time by people in the age group 25-50? What are examples of stress in your life?
Aging and Stress at Work • Age: 20 30 40 50 60 70 • Distress occurs when job expectations exceeds job enjoyment. Although thought to be age related as indicated above, it is not thought to be universal. EXPECT ENJOY
Past The Good Old Days syndrome (+) I wish things were like they were in the “good-old-days” when we had great music for a nickel and the fish were always biting. Trauma, Grief or Guilt syndrome (-) Past events that are painful and continue to plague the person in the present, like a significant loss or the feeling of guilt.
Future I can hardly wait syndrome (+) Life is always out there---- I can hardly wait ‘til graduation, marriage, kids, great job, retirement… Worry Syndrome (-) What if…………….happens Worry is just something that we do that we don’t do anything else about.
Present We live in the relative present. We each have the same number of minutes in a day. How we use those minutes determine the quality of our life. When I am anxious it is because I am living in the future. When I am depressed it is because I am living in the past. The ability to be in the present moment is a major component of mental wellness. --Abraham Maslow

Be active and productive. 6. Seek achievement on what you do, not on what your label is. 7. Satisfaction not dependent on money. 8. Only a few close, personal ties.
