Majors Offered • MSMC confers Associate in Arts degrees with the following majors: • Business Administration • Early Childhood Education • Graphic Design • Health and Human Services • Liberal Arts *English *History*Liberal Studies *Political Science*Psychology *Languages*Sociology *Gerontology*Film & Social Justice • Media Communication • Pre-Health Science * Biology *Nursing • Requirements for each major can be found in the catalog. • Students are governed by the catalog under which they enter MSMC. If subsequent catalogs have changes in major/minor or general studies requirements which are in the students' favor, they may be substituted at the option of the students.
Completion of at least 60 semester units with a grade point average of 2.0 (a C average) for all college work undertaken at Mount St. Mary's College. • Residency Requirement: 30 of the last 39 units must be taken at MSMC • Required General Studies Courses • Minimum grade you can earn C- Associate In Arts Degree Requirements
I. Communication Skills (minimum of 6 units) - GS I: • ENG 6AB or ENG 1AB/C • (Students must be enrolled in an English class every semester until they have successfully completed English 1B/C.) II. Arts and Sciences (minimum of 9 units) - GS II: • At least one course must be taken from three of the following categories. • A. Art, Music, Literature • B. History, Contemporary Economics, Politics • C. Natural, Physical Sciences • D. Social, Behavioral Sciences III. Philosophy(3) - GS III: • Ex. PHI 10: Critical Thinking A.A. General Studies Required Courses
IV. Religious Studies (6) - GS IV V. Intro to College Studies (1) - GS V VI. Outreach (1) - GS VI: • SPR60A (Social Action) OR • Fieldwork or clinical experience required by specific majors OR • Successful completion of a service learning class (SL) Diversity (3 units) VII. Diversity (3 units) - GS VII: • Ex. Soc 5, Rst 61, etc. VIII. Quantitative Literacy (3 units) - GS VIII: • (a minimum of 3 units, taken from either category, QL1 or QL2) • A. QL1 - Ex. Mth 50 • B. You must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 • If you fall below a 2.0 one semester you will be on Academic Probation; not in good standing • If you fall below a 2.0 for two consecutive semesters you will be eligible for academic dismissal. • B+ is equivalent to 3.3 grade point average • Only courses with a C-,D,F,NC may be repeated for a higher grade. • A ‘W’ –withdrawal from course does not affect a student’s GPA • In order to withdraw the student must do so by the 10th week of school (October 30, 2009 for Fall 2009). • There is usually a fee please check with the business office for more information Academic Policies
ENGLISH: • The pre-requisite for English 1A is a satisfactory score on the writing placement test; completion of English 6A & 6B • The minimum grade that can be earned in English 1A and 1B/C in order to fulfill the Written Communication GE requirement is a “C”. • English 1AB/C is the pre-requisite for upper division coursework. Class Standings and Units: • You will need a minimum number of 60 units to graduate with a associates degree & 124 units to graduate with a baccalaureate degree; 45 of these units must be upper division units • Sophomores need 30 units, Juniors need 60 units, and Seniors need 90 units. • Lower division units can be identified by the following course numbering 0-99 and upper division units 100-199 Academic Policies: CLASS STANDING
While in HS: Submit an official letter to the ADV Center, from a HS official, stating that courses were not used for HS grad requirements; and official college transcripts. • Transfer Evaluation will be generated by the ADV Center • Summer • Course Numbering NOT the same • 9 units max allowed per summer term • Articulation Agreements – online at: http://www.msmc.la.edu/academics/academic-advisement/articulation-agreements/ • Shows what courses are transferable from the different community colleges. • Credit/No Credit Courses. • No units will be given, but may fulfill the prerequisite for a class. Foreign Language • Only required for your AA. Liberal Arts and all B.A. degrees • Successful completion of Language Placement Exam will waive this requirement – but NO units will be awarded • Passing score on AP exam • Double counting • A course may not fulfill more than one category in Area III (Arts & Sciences • No course from Areas I – IV may double count to satisfy a requirement in Area V (except Phi 5 or Phi 10) • Concurrent Enrollment • Students expected to pursue study only at MSMC during Fall & Spring semesters. • If seeking an exception, must file an Academic Petition and have approval of AA Dean prior to registering at another institution.
