Human Relationships in a Project • People are the most important asset of any project • BUTPeople are also the most neglected asset in a project
Project and Human Relationships are Very Similar • UNIQUE • TEMPORARY • EVOLVING
UNIQUE • No two relationships of same type are similarThey permanently remain unique
TEMPORARY • Human life is unpredictable & Ever changing
EVOLVING • The end (or culmination) is not well defined though the purpose and direction are clearly spelt out
People Skills Challenges faced by PM (1) • Young contemporaries • Similar types; ambition; skill sets • Can be an asset to build communication • Proves challenging because- • May be seen as competitors (and not collaborators) • Jealousy, one up-man-ship
People Skills Challenges faced by PM (2) • Both sexes • Gender sensitivity • Equality with egalitarian view of life • Proves challenging because- • Young, dynamic, and charming • Likely to develop one-to-one relationship • May cause imbalance in teams, power structure, cliques, • Physical and emotional intimacy
People Skills Challenges faced by PM (3) • Authority invested in role and power flows from responsibilities • Challenging because: • Not understanding these issues i.e. • Authority is not in the person • Power is because of responsibilities • Inability to enforce discipline since team members are of (nearly) same age
People Skills Challenges faced by PM (4) • Generally, the VALUE is on developing long term relationships • The challenge is because • Ever changing composition of team • Focus is on TASKS rather than on RELATIONSHIPS Note: Essence of long term relationship is mutual respect, which must hold good in spite of changing relationships

Practicing EI Will Help You (1) • Solve problems by: • Not using your head alone, but also by using your heart • Not using logic alone, but also by feelings • Become flexible and changeable in approach and attitude • Help others to express their needs in more comfortable manner
Practicing EI Will Help You (2) • Handle difficult people not by reflex but by reflection • Keep optimistic outlook and not cynical (or defeatist) attitude • (Although this appears to be logical and commonly held approach) • Continuously learn from experience and enrich knowledge about human life
EI Needs Five Skills (1) 1) Self awareness • Awareness is • how one feels • how one “is” • what motivates and demotivates
EI Needs Five Skills (2) 2) Social skills • Communicating and relating with others • Listen intensely: LISTEN SILENT • Focus on essentials • Understand body language of self and others • Ignore distracting intonations, ignore fillers, etc. • Understand what one feels about his/her ideas
EI Needs Five Skills (3) 3) Optimism • The optimistic outlook • Energizes • Creates gestalt effect of energy(i.e. sum total is greater than the algebraic sum)
