Common Characteristics • The main evolutionary advantage is that • Symmetry: Bilateral • Body Cavity: Liver takes up 5% to 25% of body weight and about 90% of the body cavity • Free living, Carnivore, Aquatic
Life Cycle/Reproduction • Average Life Span: 30 years • Reproduces Sexually • The great white shark gives birth to 2-14 baby sharks at a time. It has one litter every two years, with 4 to 6 liters all together The eggs are fertilized and hatch inside the mother. When born, they are called pups. Pups are 4-5 feet long at birth and weigh about 40 pounds. The pups swim away from the mother immediately after birth to hunt and care for themselves. There is no care given by the mother.
Habitat and Niche • Lives in temperate oceans around the world • Niche: To hunt, and to remain the ultimate predator of the sea at the top of the food chain. • Eats: Dolphins, seals, fish and sharks
Characteristics • Interesting Characteristic: Can grow up to 8 meters long and is the worlds largest predatory fish • Has about 300 teeth that are arranged in a number of rows • Interesting behavior: They don’t hunt in groups, but by themselves • It is estimated that thousands of Great White Sharks are killed each year. • The Monterey Bay Aquarium's White Shark Project is helping research and exhibit white sharks caught off the California coast.
