Climate of Hawaii • Hawaii boasts 11 of the 13 climate zones in the world, each with special ecosystems and weather characteristics. • Hawaiian Islands include the humid tropical zones, from sea level to 450 feet 137 m the arid and semi-arid zones, the warmest parts of the islands, the temperate zones, at certain locations above 1,300 to 1,650 feet 400 to 500 m and the Alpine zones, chilly areas above 10,500 feet 3,200 m. • Fahrenheit for every 1,000-foot increase (305 m) in elevation • The ocean water temperature off Hawaii only varies from about 76 to 81 degrees F.
Hotels In Hawaii • Mauna Kea Beach hotel • For 4 nights its $1319 per person • Fine dining, spa and adventure activities • Sharks cove grill • Dine outside in a jungle-like setting with a beach-side view at Sharks Cove Grill. • Hawaiian style restaurant - completely outside in the sun and just steps from the beach!
Big Islands • The Big Island of Hawaii goes by many names, including Orchid Island for its tropical rain forests or Volcano Island a nod to active Kilauea. • Most Popular Things to Do in the Big Island • Spend a day at Volcanoes National Park • Travel to the top of Mauna Kea • Marvel at the gorgeous orchids grown in Hilo • Glimpse the lava vents of Kilauea from a helicopter • Kayak to the Captain Cook Monument
What To Pack for • Swimsuit • Sun protection you can wear like comfortable hats, sun shirts, visors, and full-body suits for the kids. Hawaii is closer to the equator than anywhere else in the continental U.S. and the sun is more intense here. Plus, you'll be out in the sun so much more. Even a small sunburn is uncomfortable and will put a crimp in your vacation. • sunglasses • sun block at least SPF 30. I put 50 on my son until he was 3. • light sleeping wear • if you will be staying at elevation or visiting the top of any of the mountains bring a sweater or sweatshirt. It does get cool, especially in the evenings, above 2500 feet elevation. • Tupperware or zip locks - for bringing small snacks to the beach and on the road with you • travel mugs - for taking your coffee on the road with you • fingernail clippers • earplugs • beach towels (only fancy, contained hotels will provide them) - consider buying these in Hawaii for an instant souvenir • snorkel and mask and fins if you own, otherwise buy, borrow, or rent them here • camera and film (if you still use it)
