Completed and Proposed Dates • June 2010 The Maryland State Board of Education adopted the Common Core Standards • August, September 2010 Curriculum teams met to compare current curriculum with Common Core State Standards using the Achieve Common Core Comparison Tool • October 2010 Gap Analysis Report presented • October – May Curriculum Revision Teams work on drafting the new Common Core State Curriculum Frameworks • May 2011 Post the draft document with opportunity for feedback • June 2011 Present draft document to State Board for review and acceptance • Summer 2011 Summer Academies

The Common Core State Standards The standards in the Common Core State Standards* • Are aligned with college and workforce expectations • Are clear, understandable and consistent • Include rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills • Build upon strengths and lessons of current state standards • Are informed by standards in other top performing countries, so that all students are prepared to succeed in our global economy; and • Are evidence-based *From the Common Core State Standards Initiative

4. Gap Analysis • Teams of Maryland Educators compared the CCSS and current State Curriculum • The analysis was completed using the CCCT – Common Core Comparison Tool • The results are being used for multiple purposes

5. Math Findings from the Gap Analysis Eighty-eight percent match to State Curriculum. Standards appear at different grade levels than State Curriculum. Statistics and Probability is taught throughout high school courses, not as separate course.

9. Maryland’s Common Core State Curriculum With the adoption of the Common Core State Standards and the findings of the Gap Analysis Report, curriculum revision teams are convening to begin development of the Common Core State Curriculum. The curriculum revision teams include educators from 23 LEA’s and representatives from higher education; these will include members from colleges of education and subject matter experts.

10. Curriculum Revision Work • Curriculum revision teams will make adjustments by adding missing standards, strengthening weak and good standards or moving standards to a different grade level. • Curriculum revision teams will begin modifying and developing toolkit items. • Technology will be an important component for instruction and assessment.

Curriculum Revision Teams • The curriculum revision teams that are meeting throughout this year are making the necessary changes, providing clarifications and resources to support teachers. • In the future, additional resources will be added through the toolkit. • Examples of assessment items will be added as they become available.

12. What Does This Mean for Teachers? • Today’s students will be taking MSA’s in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. • In 2013-2014 there is planned field testing of the new assessments, with the first operational assessments in 2014-2015. • We must thoughtfully transition to the new CCSC so that our students and teachers are prepared for the future.

13. This Summer’s Academies • Each school will send a team of four people to a regional academy – a total of 5,800 educators • There will be eleven regional academies. • Teams will meet for three consecutive summers • Each team will include : • Reading • Math • STEM • Administrator • The academies will be three days with two on-line follow-up sessions.

14. Purpose of Academies • Develop knowledge of the Maryland Common Core State Curriculum Standards and Framework. • Develop an understanding of the relationship between Maryland's vision of STEM and the Maryland Common Core State Curriculum Framework. • Provide feedback, modifications, and additions to curriculum work completed in 2010-2011. • Create a one-year study plan that will guide school staff in delivering the Academy content. • Remember, this is a multi-year implementation!!!
