Revalidation will start in early December 2012. • responsible officers and other medical leaders first, by March 2013 (Year 0 cohort-you have already been informed if you are in this group) • a fifth of licensed doctors between April 2013 and the end of March 2014 (Year 1 cohort -you will be informed by PCT if you are in this group by 31.8.12) • the majority of licensed doctors by the end of March 2015 (Year 2 cohort) • and all remaining licensed doctors by the end of March 2016 (Year 3 cohort) • You will get minimum 3 months notice of your revalidation date from the GMC
How responsible officers will make their recommendations When your revalidation recommendation is due, your responsible officer can make one of three recommendations about you. They can: • make a positive recommendation that you are up to date, fit to practise and should be revalidated (we expect this will be the case for the vast majority of doctors) • request a deferral because they need more time or more information to make a recommendation about you. For example, this might happen if you have taken an extended break from your practice. Your licence to practise is unaffected by deferral. • or notify us that you have failed to engage with appraisal or any other local systems or processes that support revalidation.
Essential Supporting Evidence • CPD (minimum 50 Credits =time + reflection or impact) • Quality Improvement activity/Audit • Significant Events (2 per yr) • Colleague Feedback • Patient Feedback • Review of complaints* and Complements • Completing Health and Probity Sections *see next slide
Serious Concerns and Formal Complaints Serious Concerns =one which , if substantiated, might call into question a doctor’s fitness to practise A formal complaint is one that activated, or should have activated, the Practice complaints procedure, involved the PCO, or involved any other formal Health service organisation. RCGP VERSION 5.0, DECEMBER 2010 –these may have been investigated by the PCT/Deanery/NCAS/GMC.
Probity and Complaints • A very important culture shift which has occurred with respect to revalidation is the necessity to discuss ALL serious concerns and complaints received at your appraisal • NOT TO DO SO is a PROBITY issue. The content of appraisals may be examined by the GMC or the Responsible Officer and if they are aware of a concern/complaint which has not been discussed this will viewed unfavourably.
Update on Colleague/Patient Feedback • It is necessary for this to be completed prior to your revalidation date –at the moment this is of immediate concern to the Year 0 cohort (who know who they are). • Clarity toolkit includes integrated Colleague and Patient Feedback currently • We have been told by David Gunn of the RCGP that the RCGP is working to integrate Colleague and Patient Feedback with their e portfolio. • On next 2 slides see approved Colleague and Patient Feedback which can be purchased (cost in the region of £85-£90+VAT) some folk in the Year 0 cohort may wish to pursue this option.

Patient Surveys are regarded as ‘fit for purpose’ for revalidation by RCGP: • General Medical Council Patient Questionnaire • Improving Practice Questionnaire (IPQ) (CFET) • EDGECUMBE 360o Version 2 • Doctors’ Interpersonal Skills Questionnaire (DISQ) • Consultation Satisfaction Questionnaire (CSQ)
Setting up a GMC On line Account http://www.gmc-uk.org/help/4002.htm • The purpose of this is for the GMC to have email contact with all licensed doctors and to ensure each licensed doctor is linked to a Responsible Officer
