TIPS ON NOTE TAKING: GREEN - Don't write it down if you don't want. It is there for you to read and make a mental note. BLUE - You should write this information down, but put it in your own words. Don't worry about coping it exactly. Put it in a way that you'll remember. BLACK - You need to write this down. It is important. If you can find a way to write it using less words that's okay, but make sure you are getting this information in your notes. RED - This is very important and needs to be written in your notes EXACTLY as it is on the board.

Founding Myths * Shinto myths explained how Japan came to be ruled by an emperor. * Ninigi grandson of the Sun Goddess she gave him three gifts: 1) a bronze mirror (truth). 2) an iron sword (wisdom). 3) a curved jewel (kindness). * Jimmu was Ninigi's grandson and he became Japan's first emperor.
Japanese Imperial Family How are emperors usually chosen in an empire?
Japanese Imperial Family * About 2,000 years ago, warlike clans were competing for land and power. * The Yamato clan was the winner of this power struggle and finally took control of Japan. * They claimed to be descendants from the royal "Sun" (Sun Goddess). * This meant that their emperors were living gods on Earth.

Borrowing from China * In 593, Prince Shotoku took power in Japan regent for the empress, his Aunt Suiko. * He was a big fan of China and Chinese culture. * He supported Buddhism during his rule. * He studied Confucianism and believed that it could help unify his country.
Borrowing from China * To unite Japan under a strong central government Prince Shotoku had to reduce the power of the clan leaders. * The Seventeen Articles was Japan's first constitution and was based on Confucian and Buddhist thought.
Later Reforms How do you predict that Prince Shotoku would reduce the power of the clan leaders?
Later Reforms * Prince Shotoku died in 622. His supporters carried on his reforms. * In 642 they instituted the Taika (Great Change) reforms. * These were new laws that made everyone subject to the emperor.
Later Reforms * Lands/people controlled by the clan leaders now belonged to the emperor. * In return clan leaders were given paid government official jobs. From this picture above can you guess what happened to the clan leaders that didn't go along with these reforms?
Important things to remember: * To unite Japan Prince Shotoku had to shrink the power of the clans. * As regent Prince Shotoku encouraged Buddhism and Chinese culture.
