  3. Activating Prior Knowledge • Have you heard the word fraction? • The root frac means “break.” • Can you see the root rupt in interrupt? • The root rupt means “break or burst.” • Can you see the root frag in the Spanish word “fragmento” or in the English word fragment?

  18. Extension One of the key words in this lesson is fragment. It has two parts: the root frag (break) and the suffix –ment. Ment can be used as a suffix on a complete word as well as on a root.
