Municipal Elections • Every town/city is divided into voting areas called "wards" (e.g. Bramalea is in Ward 8) Sandra Hames • People who live in the ward elect onecouncillor to sit on City Council • People also vote for a mayor
Regional Elections • There are 24 Councillors plus the Chair appointed to Peel Region's Council: • Regional Chair: Gael • Caledon, 5 Councillors • Brampton, 7 Councillors • Mississauga, 12 Councillors
Federal and Provincial Elections • Each province is divided into voting areas called "ridings" (e.g. Bramalea is in the riding of Bramalea-Gore-Malton) • In each riding, a number of candidates will run in the election • Most of these candidates belong to a political party (e.g. the Liberals, NDP, etc.) • People who live in the riding get to vote for ONE candidate only
The candidate who gets the most votes wins the election in that riding • S/he gets a "seat" in Parliament and is the MP or MPP for that riding • The current MPP is vacant. For Cooksville East it was Peter Fonseca. • The current MP is vacant. It was AlbinaGuarnieri. http://webinfo.parl.gc.ca/MembersOfParliament/ProfileMP.aspx?Key=128094&Language=E
Provincial • There are 107 ridings in Ontario • Each riding chooses an MPP • Our riding is Bramalea-Gore-Malton • Our MPP is Jagmeet Singh
Federal • In Canada, there are 308 ridings • Ontario has 106 (most of any province) • PEI has 4; Quebec has 75 • Each riding elects an MP • Our riding is also Bramalea-Gore-Malton • Our current MP is Bal Gosal
Who becomes Prime Minister or Premier? • At the end of the election, they count how many candidates from each party won a seat • The party with the most seats wins the election and becomes the ruling government • That party's leader becomes the Prime Minister or the Premier
Thus, in the 2008 federal election, the Conservative Party won the most seats. Stephen Harper is the leader of the CP therefore he became our Prime Minister • In the last provincial election, the Liberals won the most seats. Their leader is Dalton McGuinty, thus he became the Premier of Ontario.
REMEMBER!!! • We do not vote for our Prime Minister or Premier (like they do in the USA) but we do vote for our Mayor • The leader of the winning party gets to be PM or Premier • The leader of the political party that comes in second place becomes the Leader of the Opposition
