  1. Motherboard, CPU and Chipset This is the heart of the computer!

  2. Motherboard • The largest and most important circuit board in the computer • AKA: main board or system board • Holds the CPU • All devices communicate with CPU via: • Installed directly • Linked by cable through a port • Indirectly linked by expansion card

  3. Motherboard Components • Processing: • CPU • Chipset • Temporary storage: • RAM • Power Supply Connection • Programming & Setup Data: • Flash ROM • CMOS RAM

  4. Motherboard holds ports • Ports are used to communicate with external devices. • Common ports: • Keyboard & Mouse ports • Parallel port • S/PDIF sound port • USB port • Serial port • FireWire • Network ports (Ethernet)

  5. Rules of cables attached to motherboard: • Flat cables are data cables • Round cables are power cables • Best to trace cable to its destination!!!

  6. Chipset • Definition: a group of microchips on the motherboard that control the flow of data to and from processor.

  7. Chipset Manufacturers • Most common personal computers use either of two manufacturers: • Intel • AMD • Click here to see recent market share trends!
