The new next generation NQF BTEC Firsts Quality Assurance Model 2012-13
Working in partnership to deliver quality and standards • This BTEC Quality Assurance Model covers the new next generation NQF BTEC Firsts • It includes three elements: • Full guidance will be found in the UK BTEC Quality Assurance Handbook • Go to www.btec.co.uk/keydocuments
Quality Review & DevelopmentDevelop quality, deliver success, raise attainment • Every BTEC centre receives an annual visit from a Centre Quality Reviewer • Visits take place between October and April • Checks centre systems against defined Quality Objectives & Measures • Places strong emphasis on the management of internal verification
Lead Internal Verifier supportConfidence in assessing to the standards • Each Principal Subject Area should register a Lead Internal Verifier • We provide the Lead Internal Verifier with direct training and standardisation • Specific standardisation materials are available for the new next generation NQF BTEC Firsts • The Lead Internal Verifier registers via Edexcel Online and accesses standardisation materials to use with their team • Standardisation materials are available from September 2013 • Use of the standardisation materials is compulsory, but is not a “test” to obtain accreditation • The Lead Internal Verifier re-registers each September
Standards VerificationChecking practice, supporting standards • Standards Verification is an annual process for the new next generation NQF BTEC Firsts • Your Standards Verifier will discuss your assessment plan (i.e. when you are completing units and which assessors/learners are involved) with your Lead Internal Verifier and set the sample required from this information • The Standards Verifier will sample: • assignment briefs • assessed learner work • internal verification documentation • Full details are published each year in the BTEC Quality Assurance Handbook

BTEC SPORT STANDARDS VERIFIER TRAINING SECTOR UPDATES
Sampling Issues • Sampling Process • Assessment Plans • OSCA Completion • OSCA Registration • Assignment Briefs
Assessment Plans (1) • After your initial email with centres request the Assessment Plan from the centre Lead IV Programme Leader • If the centre does not have an Assessment Plan send them the document - do not proceed to agree the sample until you have seen a completed Assessment Plan • When you have received the Assessment Plan ensure that the correct number of internal assessments have been mapped on the assessment plan – if not send it back and request it to be completed ASAP
Assessment Plans (2) • Ensure that all dates for assignment hand out, interim submission and final submission are included on the Assessment Plan - if not send it back and request it to be completed ASAP • Only when you see a completed Assessment Plan agree to select the sample. • You must assess as much learner work as you can in the first year– (Full Unit Sampling only) • Units to be sampled should be selected using the Sport Unit Groupings Document • You must comment on the Assessment Plan on the Sampling Report Form (Additional Comments)
OSCA (1) • After you have sent the introduction email and requested the Assessment Plan please ensure that you check that all assessors delivering the BTEC NQF qualification have completed the OSCA Training • Process is different to OSCA QCF – all assessors have to complete the training (not a test as such) • If centres have not complete the OSCA direct them firstly towards the OSCA website where they can complete registration and access the materials
OSCA (2) • To direct centres towards OSCA materials and where to register please direct them to the following website: • http://www.edexcel.com/btec/delivering-BTEC/quality/BTEC-assessment/Pages/default.aspx • Lead IV must undertake the training first • Then the Lead IV must ensure that all assessors have completed the exercises • SV’s must ensure that this has been carried out. • To reinforce importance please continually reinforce – via email and telephone conversations
Assignment Briefs (1) • Firstly please inform all centres that the process of designing assignments for NQF qualifications is very different to designing assignments for QCF • Authorised assignment briefs are available for centres to review and download via the Pearson BTEC Sport website • Support materials/award/certificate/extended certificate/authorised assignment briefs
Assignment Briefs (2) • Internally Designed Assignment briefs should be promoted • When internally designed the assignment brief is often contextualised to the learners in the centre • However, we must ensure that the rules of assignment design are followed by centres – Please use this 10 point guide to support assessment design
Assignment Briefs (3) – 10 Point Guide • Ensure all key administrative information is included upon the assignment brief – Programme Details; Unit Number; Unit Title; Assignment Title; Learning Outcomes Targeted in the assessment; Assessors Name; Date of Hand Out of Assignment to learner; interim submission date; final submission date; Internal Verifiers Name; Date of Internal Verification • All Assignments should have a vocational scenario which includes an appropriate context. Context should reflect the knowledge, experience and qualifications of the learners • Each assignment brief should cover the assessment criteria for at least one learning aim.
Assignment Briefs (4) – 10 Point Guide cont… • All tasks should be contextualised against the vocational scenario. • Tasks should target Level 1 criteria, but there should not be discrete tasks for L1 crtieria. Level 1 criteria is only assessed when the Level 2 Pass criteria has not been met. • Where possible assignment tasks should cover more than one criterion and not be split into pass criteria, merit criteria and distinction criteria tasks • Assessment criterion alone should not formulate tasks
Assignment Briefs (5) – 10 Point Guide cont… • Where possible the assessment command verbs should not be used in the assessment tasks • Unit content should be embedded into the tasks but not simply listed at the end of tasks • All assignment briefs included Authorised Assignment Briefs & amended Authorised Assignment Briefs should be internally verified prior to the distribution of the briefs to learners
General Issues 2012/2013 – Lessons Learnt • Tardiness – Full Unit Sampling • Issues with assessment criteria • Assessment Evidence Observation Records • Sampling – No Assessed Learner Work • The SV Report Form • Communication with Centres
General Issues 2012/2013 – Lessons Learnt (2) • Submission of the Report Form – No Learner Evidence Assessed • Submission of Report form – Incomplete Sample • 1 Year Registrations/Certification • Assignment Checking Service
Sampling Tips 2013/2014 (1) • Make initial contact – introductory email • Request Assessment Plan & Check Completion of OSCA and registration of OSCA • Review Assessment Plan – agree sample for academic year • If practical units are selected agree on evidence requirements • Request Assignment Briefs for Units to be Sampled – Check for ACS feedback and review the feedback
Sampling Tips 2013/2014 (2) • If a centre is not assessing any internally assessed units then you must still sample and report upon the assignment briefs • Prior to sampling takes place provide feedback on the assignment brief formally – please show your Team Leader your first formative feedback upon an assignment brief • Update your Team Leader about any changes to sampling dates
Sampling Tips 2013/2014 (3) • Carry out the sampling of assessed work selecting the sample as soon as the work has been assessed and internally verified – at this stage the work should be ready to send • Provide as many recommended actions as possible – remember this will be the first year for many centres in delivering this qualification. They will need lots of support • Feedback should be detailed for each of the areas in the report for each unit • Remember that your Team Leader will need to sign off and view your first sample prior to submission of the report to the centre – Do not submit the report until your Team Leader has agreed that the feedback is appropriate
Sampling Tips 2013/2014 (4) • Prior to submission of report complete a proof read of the report • Only block full samples, all other samples should be submitted as sample incomplete – second sampling for centres who are not certifying learners will take place in the following academic year • After submission ensure you follow up with an email to both the Lead IV and Quality Nominee • Ensure you also contact the Lead IV via the telephone to discuss the report. Especially the blocked samples/units
