Understanding ‘Cloud Chamber’ detectors Sub-micron particle detection? 0.0025 micron particles ? • In an air space 1 cm3 there are approximately 15,000 - 0.0025 sub-micron particles in normal conditions i.e. (no overheat condition or fire) • In the same size air space (1 cm3 ) when there is an overheat or fire condition approximately 10,000,000,000 0.0025 sub-micron particles are produced The ‘Cloud Chamber’ detects this increase in particle generation The problem is that these particles are INVISIBLE

Cloud Chamber From invisible particles that cannot be measured To BIGGER visible particles that can be measured Airflow containing ALL particles passes through the ‘Cloud Chamber’ ‘Cloud Chamber’ process condenses water droplets on to all particles The enlarged particles form a cloud and the ‘Cloud Chamber’ measures the resultant cloud density
