New standards, new norms… • Keep an open mind. • Not every historical event will be taught – it is about inquiry. • Eighth grade students will make connections between historical and current/recent issues as a base for implementing change in society. • Our goal is for students to understand the government of our country and how that has shaped history and how history has shaped it. • Students will recognize and practice their roles and responsibilities as both American and global citizens.
Disciplinary Skills • Reading/constructing graphs and flow charts, timelines, etc. • Following written and oral directions • Using visual aids to organize and comprehend information (graphic organizers, webs, thinking maps) • Content area vocabulary and strategies for determining meaning of unknown words • Reading and examining primary documents • Summarizing • Distinguishing fact from opinion • Comparing/contrasting • Cause/effect • Note taking
GRADING • Weighted: Classwork/Homework = 20% Assessments = 80% • Late work = PARTIAL CREDIT ONLY Classwork/Homework: 50% Assessment:10% per day Absences are accommodated. Please encourage your student to communicate issues in advance Journal (SSJ) is to be made up if absent. Prompts are on the agenda. • Test Corrections/Extra Credit Study Guides
