Project Title: Ecosystems Task 2 “Fire Impacts of MPB” PI: Jenny BriggsProposed change of title: “Ecosystem disturbance in Colorado’s pine forests” (- impacts of mountain pine beetle, fire, and management) • FY10: Briggs = maternity leave 400 hrs May-Sept. • Initiated CESU agreement with CSU to fund PhD student/project crew leader and data analyst Dan West 65% 2010 and 2011 (approx. $25K/yr) • Obtained matching funds for field techs summer 2010 (CSFS: $10K; BCPOS: $8K) • Field study completed 2nd season

Project Title: Ecosystems Task 2 “Fire Impacts of MPB” PI: Jenny BriggsProposed change of title: “Ecosystem disturbance in Colorado’s pine forests” (- impacts of mountain pine beetle, fire, and management) • FY11 Budget Request: $154K • $100K LRS + $54K GAM • Salary: Briggs $110K; Cigan (Fall field tech) $3K. • O&E: Travel $2K; Supplies $2K; Summer field tech salary $8K (will hire through CSU) - Additional funds for 2 summer field techs, field vehicle, etc being sought through small grants

FY 11 Project Objective • Investigate dynamics and effects of MPB in all the forest ecosystems it is currently/potentially threatening: lodgepole, ponderosa, mixed conifer; both managed and unmanaged • Continue existing field and lab studies – year 3 • Integrate field data with remotely sensed data to map disturbance broadly • Provide information to managers planning for MPB impacts • Planned Deliverables • 5 ongoing relevant manuscripts – 4 Grand Co., 1 Front Range RMNP • Data summaries, reports, presentations - larger Front Range study • Accomplishments Summer 2010-FY11 to date • Completed data collection at 60 previous and 20 new field sites • Initiated novel field and lab experiments on MPB host selection • Continuing data summary and preliminary analyses • Invited to present at several regional forums

  4. Issues • Previous vs. current priorities • Completion of outstanding “Grand County” products vs. immediate Front Range project progress, data collection, analyses • Project scope • Current regional, ecological focus – high relevance to DOI and other management partners; disturbance ecology science • Future potential focus on climate change, landscape change modeling, ecosystem services? - would need MORE experts, MORE $$! • Add FourMile Canyon post-fire study? – FireMPBmanagement • Funding sources • Short-term: • enough RS for LRS? • ? about small grant matching funds, $ for FourMile Cyn work • ? additional funds FY12 for completion of work by Dan West • Long-term: • Good fit for Ecosystems MA as well as CLC • Attempt more ambitious proposals with other researchers?
