What we will cover today: • Health and Safety • Academic Requirements and Learning Agreements • Meeting German Speakers • Exploring and Developing Mindsets: developing graduate skills
Health Insurance • EHIC • Might not cover ongoing health issues such as • Chronic illness requiring regular medication • Ongoing mental health issues, requiring regular medication or therapy • Check with your doctor In the UK/ home country and EHIC to ensure you will continue to receive the right treatment
Year Abroad = Junior Honours Aims: • Language Acquisiton • Development of Academic Skills • Personal and Professional Development, graduate mindsets
Academic Work during Year Abroad Year abroad is your Junior Honours Year and counts towards your degree!!! You need to bring back 120 credits • Language acquisition through residence (speaking and writingskills) • E-learning course • Year Abroad Activity
Erasmus Students Your exchange is through German, so you will be enrolled for Germanistik at most of our partner universities (some unis like Freiburg organise their database via bilateral agreements-- the one that matches Edinburgh university is via Freiburgs English department. This is purely an administrative issue, so please select English as your 1st subject (although you won´t take classes from this department) and German as your 2nd. Germanistik is part of the Philosophische Fakultät (Humanities)
University Course choices • Language courses: starting point CEFR level B2 + leading towards C1 or C2 • Courses should be picked from the regular „Vorlesungsverzeichnis“ (course catalogue) • Content courses specifically designed for Erasmus/ visiting/ international students should be avoided • You may pick ONE course designed for Ersmus courses, either language or content but it must not be worth more than 8 ECTS credits per term • Courses have to be taught in German • Courses must be taught during regular term time • Courses have to be assessed and awarded a mark (not pass/fail) • Courses have to reflect your degree programme, i.e have to do with the language, culture, literature or history of the German speaking countries
Students on Works Placements Students on work placements have to do some academic writing for German : • Year Abroad Essay • Dissertation preparation Type of written work depends on Year Abroad Plan and degree programme (see following slides/ Year Abroad APP)
German + OSNAL You need to check your DRPS and liaise with the Erasmus coordinator from your OSNAL subject about their YA requirements: Degree Regulations and Programmes of Study: http://www.drps.ed.ac.uk/16-17/dpt/drps_llc.htm
Learning Agreements • All students have to fill in a signed Learning Agreement • Learning agreements have to be signed by 2 people: 1) Year Abroad Coordinator at partner university OR mentor for work placement 2) German Year Abroad Coordinator in Edinburgh • Learning Agreements must be send to the DELc Year Abroad Office BEFORE you start your university course/ internship and require my signed approval • If you change courses/ work placement, you need to fill in the „During the Mobility Form“ of your Learning Agreement and have it signed by me and the coordiator of the partner institution
Learning Agreements Learning Agreements for Erasmus students ensure: • You have enough credits • You selected the right type of courses for German • Your course choices prepare you for your 4th year Learning Agreements for students on work placements ensure: • Your work placement is the required length and quality • Your work placement offers enough opportunity to bring your language level up to C1 • Your work placement prepares you for your 4th year
