  1. Technology William Engeler, COMS

  2. What is “technology”?

  3. Technology Defined: A manner of accomplishing a task especially using technical processes, methods, or knowledge. Assistive Technology Defined: An umbrella term that includes assistive, adaptive, and rehabilitative devices for people with disabilities and also includes the process used in selecting, locating, and using them.

  4. Assistive Technology:Challenges and Needs • 57% of TVIs lack adequate confidence about teaching assistive technology • TVIs lack knowledge in 55 of 74 competencies • Students do not learn to use assistive technology because of this lack of confidence and knowledge which ultimately leads to a lack of opportunity for students (Zhou, Smith, Parker, & Griffin-Shirley 2011)

  5. Areas with Lack of Knowledge or Skill • Braille Literacy • AT for MIVI • Prescribing AT devices • The use of most AT devices • Strategies for teaching AT • Assessing and Recommending and Using AT in different environments • Teaching students to access information • Professional Development

  6. How can YOU learn to use and teach technology to YOUR students?

  7. Recommendations • Self Learning • Provide University Programs • Advocacy for comprehensive preparation programs • AT In-service training • An AT support system for TVIs

  27. “The rapid advancement of technologies holds the power either to widen or to narrow the gap between the general population and the population with visual impairments in their ability to participate in society. It is the way teachers of students with visual impairments deal with the challenge that will determine the future of students with visual impairments.”(Zhou, Smith, Parker, & Griffin-Shirley 2011)
