Old Immigrants arrived in the 1700s & 1800s. They mainly came from NW Europe -England -Sweden -Germany -Ireland -Scotland -Norway *They were able to assimilate (blend in) because of their: Appearance Language Religion
The second wave of immigrants were the New Immigrants
New Immigrants came to the U.S. from (around) 1880-1920. Why would so many immigrants have wanted to come here at that time? Factory Jobs!

Usually people from this part of the world had darker skin or hair, spoke different languages (some even had a completely different style of writing) and different religions.

What happened to immigrants at Ellis Island? They were checked for sickness or other ailments and they sometimes had their names changed to sound more “American”
