  3. Carboxylic Acids • Carboxylic acids have a –COOH– functional group (pronounced –anoic) • Methanoic acid – HCOOH  • Ethanoic acid – CH3COOH • Propanoic acid – C2H5COOH

  4. Carboxylic Acids • Carboxylic acids are used for soap and ester production • They react like any other acid with carbonates, producing carbon dioxides, e.g. ethanoic acid + sodium carbonate  carbon dioxide + sodium ethanoate • Carboxylic acids dissolve in water to produce acidic solutions (though they do not ionise completely and do not release many H+ ions so their pH is of a weak acid)
