  2. What is it? • Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that is lighter than air. • In high quantities, it’s highly toxic to humans, especially since it is impossible to see.

  3. How is it created? • Forms when there’s not enough oxygen to produce carbon dioxide. Example: When operating a stove in an enclosed space. • In the presence of oxygen, carbon monoxide burns with a blue flame, producing carbon dioxide.

  4. Where is it most common? Natural origins such as: • Volcanoes • Forest Fires • Other forms of combustion

  5. Effects of CO Flu like symptoms such as: • Headache • Dizziness • Disorientation • Nausea • Fatigue Many people are misdiagnosed by doctors, because symptoms are attributed to viral illnesses.

  6. Long Term Effects • The reason why carbon monoxide is so harmful is that it displaces the levels of oxygen within the blood, which results in the death of cells and damage to major organs. The long term effects (other than death) usually consist of: • memory loss • brain function • behavior change • cognition

  7. CO Case Study On December 26, 2011, five teens were staying at the Hotel Presidente near the Miami International Airport. Their second floor guestroom was connected to the garage by a stairway where they left their car running. They went to the hotel to celebrate the birthday of one of the teens, and left the car running because they had problems keeping the battery charged. A 2007 Florida law requires that carbon monoxide detectors be installed in hotel and motel boiler rooms but not in garages or guestrooms. All five teens died from CO poisoning, not even surviving the holidays.

  8. Case Study 2 Four people, including two children, were found dead of carbon monoxide poisoning in their Oakhurst home. Carbon monoxide is "an undetectable and silent killer," said Madera County Sheriff John Anderson. "You don't realize it until it overtakes you.“ The family had their electricity shut off some time earlier in the week after not paying their bills. The family apparently used the gasoline-powered generator to provide power and heat. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises people to never use a gas range or oven to heat a home, or use any gasoline-powered equipment in an enclosed space, such as a basement.
