SPECIALS • Day 1 – Computer Lab (Mr. Steinberg) • Day 1 – Library (Mrs. Cowan) • Days 2 & 5 – P.E. (Mrs. Young) • Days 3 & 6 – Music (Mrs. Varjabedian) • Day 4 – Art (Mrs. Newall)
Snack Break • Healthy snacks are expected to keep in line with the Wellness Policy (fruit, veggies, cereal bars, cheese and crackers, etc…). • Keep it to one small item and a drink (not a meal). • It is a “working” snack break – so keep it simple and not too messy (no liquids or dips, please) • Usually at 2:15 each day.
Birthdays • Birthdays for each month will be acknowledged with a small present from me. • Children with a birthday during that month are welcome to bring in a non-food treat to share with the class. • The health policy demands that no food items be brought in for the class.
Homework Policy • Expect 60 minutes per night. • Students need to read independently 20 minutes each night and complete the Reading Log. • Agenda needs to be signed nightly. • Write a note if it is too difficult or there are unusual circumstances that prevent the student from completing the homework. • See the Homework Policy handout for expectations, consequences, and scoring rubric.
Following the Rules • WORK HARD! BE NICE! • Review the school and district policies in your handbooks. • Be Respecful. Be Responsible. Be Ready to Learn. • Please take the time to read through and sign the Behavior Management Policy and return it to me.
5th Grade Curriculum • Follows the Common Core Massachusetts Frameworks. • Is “fine-tuned” by MCAS results and areas of student need. • Involves a variety of instructional approaches to reach every learner using the Response to Intervention approach. • Places a heavy emphasis on writing, literacy, and math and integrates science and social studies throughout. • Encourages effective writing skills and communication of ideas across all subjects.
Reading • Based on the Common Core State Standards and the ELA curriculum guide • Focuses on learning to read, comprehend, comprehend and respond to informational text • Incorporates Reading Workshop model with the Units of Study designed for Grade 5 • Encourages increased independent reading
Math • Based on Everyday Mathematics program and Common Core State Standards. • We are using enVisons 2.0. • Focuses on problem solving, multiplication, division, area and perimeter, volume, basic geometry and measurement, early algebra concepts, and an understanding of the number system. • Supplementary practice provided to enrich and reinforce the concepts.
Social Studies • Focuses on the History of the United States. • Includes units on Pre-Columbian civilizations, Exploration, Colonization, The American Revolution, the Constitution, and Westward Expansion. • Teaches about citizenship of the U.S., structure of the government, and important documents that have shaped our country.
Science • Based on the Houghton-Mifflin Science program with an emphasis on informational text literacy skills. • Units include: • The Water Cycle and Weather • Energy (heat, light, sound…) & Electricity • Animal Behaviors and Adaptations • Living Things (cells, plants…) • Engineering and Design
Writing • Integrates the 6+1 Traits of Writing elements with the Writers Express Program. • Encourages students to see themselves as writers for all purposes. • Promotes effective written communication. • Will include pieces that are informational / expository and imaginative / literary. • Emphasis on synthesizing information from multiple sources.
Communication There will be a weekly Tuesday Folder (Please read contents and return any necessary forms.) There is a website for the class that can be accessed through the school website. (http://kuketzmkg41.weebly.com/ ) It is updated regularly and has each night’s assignments on it.
