Keeping Brunswick's PetWaste at Bay Pet Waste Facts and Solutions Prepared & Presented by Carrie Myers December 11, 2012
Maryland’s waterways… • Are a network of connected streams, wetlands, creeks, and rivers, affected by everything that takes place on the land surrounding them. • Can be significantly polluted by pet waste.
Did You Know? • Decaying pet waste consumes much needed oxygen and can release ammonia that damages the health of fish and aquatic life? • Pet waste carries bacteria, viruses, and parasites? • Pet waste contains nutrients that promote weed and algae growth?
What affect does pet waste in the Bay have on my family? Besides the obvious health risks to families, pet waste in the Bay can: • Make recreational waters unfit for swimming and other fun activities. • Increase the burden on treatment facilities, causing higher water and sewer rates for residents.
What can I do to help eliminate this problem? • Through a generous grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust, the City of Brunswick is installing pet waste stations in several of our parks and trails. • When walking your pets, please take advantage of these convenient stations and properly dispose of all pet waste. • Encourage others to follow the same guidelines to keep us all safe.
Where are Brunswick’s Pet Waste Stations? • Brunswick Crossing Trail Head • West End Park • Lower Kim Weddle Park • Square Corner Park • Railroad Square Park • Family Campground • City Park • City Pool • Galyn Manor Park • Sports Complex
