Likelihood Intelligent Life Has Evolved Elsewhere By Alicia Jones
The Drake Equation • The Drake equation is a formula used to estimate the number of active, communicative extraterrestrial civilizations in the Milky Way galaxy • There is no unique solution
Guess That Number!!!! Can you guess how many detectable planets in our galaxy possibly have intelligent life according to the Drake equation????? A. 1,897 B. 25 C. 127 D. 568
The Fermi ParadoxWhere are they? • It is a contradiction between the high estimates of ET life, and the lack of communication or overall all proof that is available
The Bayesian Analysis • The Bayesian Inference is a method in which Bayes rule is applied to a hypothesis to update its probability as additional evidence is required • Spiegel and Turner- A pair of astrophysicists that applied the Bayesian inference to the question of is there life, and declared that life could be just as easily rare as it could be plentiful • They suggest that we are biased
What two scientists applied the Bayesian analysis to the essential question of: Probability of Intelligent Life? A. Barney and Friends B. Ben & Jerry C. Adam and Eve D. Spiegel and Turner
What Stephen Hawking Thinks…… • Necessary planetary conditions to form life may have existed about 4 billion years after big bang • Early appearance of life on Earth suggests there’s a good chance of life spontaneously happening else where with suitable conditions • Believes if there is intelligent life, it will want figure out a way to survive and to do that they will look to colonize other star systems; if they are chemically based chances are they will use genetic engineering to survive indefinitely • Conclusion: It is possible that there is intelligent life, but it is also possible that they destroyed themselves, they’ve yet to be found, or we’ve simply overlooked them
Homework!!! • Clicking the link below, use the Drake equation to estimate the number of intelligent life you think exists in our galaxy and explain why you do or do not think it is an accurate estimation: http://www.activemind.com/Mysterious/topics/seti/drake_equation.html
