  4. The Fermi ParadoxWhere are they? • It is a contradiction between the high estimates of ET life, and the lack of communication or overall all proof that is available

The Bayesian Analysis • The Bayesian Inference is a method in which Bayes rule is applied to a hypothesis to update its probability as additional evidence is required • Spiegel and Turner- A pair of astrophysicists that applied the Bayesian inference to the question of is there life, and declared that life could be just as easily rare as it could be plentiful • They suggest that we are biased

What Stephen Hawking Thinks…… • Necessary planetary conditions to form life may have existed about 4 billion years after big bang • Early appearance of life on Earth suggests there’s a good chance of life spontaneously happening else where with suitable conditions • Believes if there is intelligent life, it will want figure out a way to survive and to do that they will look to colonize other star systems; if they are chemically based chances are they will use genetic engineering to survive indefinitely • Conclusion: It is possible that there is intelligent life, but it is also possible that they destroyed themselves, they’ve yet to be found, or we’ve simply overlooked them
