  1. SPIs 0807.5.1 to 5.4 Classification, Adaptations. Variations, and Biodiversity Bell Work May 7, 2013 Does life exist elsewhere in the universe? • A) (Opinion Question) Choose yes or no, and write 2 or more sentences explaining/defending your answer. • B) Imagine that life does in fact exist elsewhere in the universe. What might it be like? • Primitive or advanced? • Intelligent or non-intelligent? • Friendly on non-friendly? • Write 2 or more sentences about what such life might be like.

  2. SPIs 0807.5.1 to 5.4 Classification, Adaptations. Variations, and Biodiversity  Brainpop Video • Now we will watch a Brainpop video • about the possibility of extraterrestrial (alien) life • Click on this link and log in: Brainpop website

  3. SPIs 0807.5.1 to 5.4 Classification, Adaptations. Variations, and Biodiversity  Notes Extraterrestrial Life (On Mars?) • On July 28, 1976 the Viking-One spacecraft tested for life on Mars with four experiments. One experiment gave a positive reading. (Results were considered inconclusive) Viking 1 Lander (USA) Exploring Mars 1976

  4. SPIs 0807.5.1 to 5.4 Classification, Adaptations. Variations, and Biodiversity  Notes Extraterrestrial Life (On Mars?) A) 1984-A Martian meteorite found on Earth showed potential signs of life B) 1998-Another Martian meteorite found on Earth appeared to have fossils of life forms similar to bacteria C) July 2003-NASA confirmed the existence of water on Mars in the form of underground ice. D) March 5, 2011-NASA scientist, Richard B. Hoover, (astrobiologist) stated for the 3rd time his view that microfossils were present in meteorites from Mars

  5. SPIs 0807.5.1 to 5.4 Classification, Adaptations. Variations, and Biodiversity  Notes Does intelligent life (aliens) exist elsewhere in the universe? If yes, what would they be like? (A) First we will look at some images about what Hollywood and the general public thinks aliens might be like. (B) Then we will get into groups and come up with ideas about what intelligent aliens might actually be like if they exist.

  6. SPIs 0807.5.1 to 5.4 Classification, Adaptations. Variations, and Biodiversity  Notes Star Wars: Wookies

  7. SPIs 0807.5.1 to 5.4 Classification, Adaptations. Variations, and Biodiversity  Notes Star Wars: Greedo

  8. SPIs 0807.5.1 to 5.4 Classification, Adaptations. Variations, and Biodiversity  Notes Star Wars: Jabba the Hutt

  9. SPIs 0807.5.1 to 5.4 Classification, Adaptations. Variations, and Biodiversity  Notes Alien Abduction Stories: Blue or Gray Aliens

  10. SPIs 0807.5.1 to 5.4 Classification, Adaptations. Variations, and Biodiversity  Notes Star Trek-Aliens: Male and Female

  11. SPIs 0807.5.1 to 5.4 Classification, Adaptations. Variations, and Biodiversity  Notes Independence Day (the movie)

  12. SPIs 0807.5.1 to 5.4 Classification, Adaptations. Variations, and Biodiversity  Notes Does intelligent life (aliens) exist elsewhere in the universe? If yes, what would they be like? • Get into groups and come up with 2 to 3 ideas about what intelligent aliens might actually be like if they exist. (see two examples below) • Examples: What they might look like • Examples: What kind of technology might they have?

  13. SPIs 0807.5.1 to 5.4 Classification, Adaptations. Variations, and Biodiversity  Notes What About UFOs? • U.F.O. • stands for unidentified flying object • can be anything flying in the sky that you don’t recognize • However just because you don't recognize it does not mean that it is extraterrestrial (maybe or maybe not) (see images on following slides)

  14. SPIs 0807.5.1 to 5.4 Classification, Adaptations. Variations, and Biodiversity  Notes Flying Saucers (Are these real?)

  15. SPIs 0807.5.1 to 5.4 Classification, Adaptations. Variations, and Biodiversity  Notes Flying Saucers (Are these real?)

  16. SPIs 0807.5.1 to 5.4 Classification, Adaptations. Variations, and Biodiversity  Notes What About Spaceships from the Movies? • Movie Spaceships • come in all shapes and sizes • often with "magical" anti-gravity devices and faster-than-light engines (which may be impossible) (see images on following slides)

  17. SPIs 0807.5.1 to 5.4 Classification, Adaptations. Variations, and Biodiversity  Notes Star Wars: X-Wing Fighter

  18. SPIs 0807.5.1 to 5.4 Classification, Adaptations. Variations, and Biodiversity  Notes Star Wars: Star Destroyer

  19. SPIs 0807.5.1 to 5.4 Classification, Adaptations. Variations, and Biodiversity  Notes Star Trek: USS Enterprise

  20. SPIs 0807.5.1 to 5.4 Classification, Adaptations. Variations, and Biodiversity  Notes Have intelligent aliens ever visited Earth? • Get back into your groups and decide yes or no about this question. Then provide (at least) one valid scientific reason to support your point of view. Would intelligent aliens be friendly or hostile? • Again decide yes or no to this question and again provide • (at least) one valid logical reason to support your opinion.
