  3. Roosevelt & McKinley • Pres. McKinley chooses popular TR as VP • McKinley gets killed, VP becomes President • TR Begins a Progressive Agenda as President • Conservation • Supervising Big Business • Helping Labor • Becomes the most powerful President in history

  4. Managing Natural Resources • Wanted to take care of America’s resources • Childhood • 1902 Reclamation Act • Funded irrigation projects to reclaim land and support farms • Resource Management • Managing the resources like a corporation • Built new National Parks • 150 million acres of forests

  5. Supervising Big Business • Monitor/ limit the growth of trusts (Monopolies) • 95% railroads owned by 6 corporations • 1890 Sherman Anti-Trust Act • Prohibited monopolies • Holding companies got around Sherman • TR enforced Sherman AA • “Trust Buster”

Helping the Common Man • Settling Strikes • 1902 Mine workers Strike • More money/ Less Hours/ Safer Conditions • Both sides refused to negotiate • TR’s arbitration (Outside party settles dispute) • Forced a compromise (Seen as public savior) • Upton Sinclair’s “The Jungle” exposed greed of corporate America • Meat Inspection Act 1906 as a result • TR is seen as a public defender
