Setting the scene • Work can be insecure and oppressive; it can seem purposeless and meaningless, or worse, it can make us feel part of unjust oppressive systems. Work can isolate us and leave us disconnected from our fellow human beings... • Holbeche & Springett (2004) In search of meaning in the workplace, Roffey Park • Holbeche and Springett
Bernard Moss • Professor of Social Work Education and Spirituality, • Staffordshire University • Senior Fellow & National Teaching Fellow, Higher Education Academy • Former Director: Centre for Spirituality and Health, Staffordshire University
Employees perform most energetically, creatively and enthusiastically when they believe they are contributing to a purpose that is bigger than themselves (Holbeche and S[ringett (2004) • Common values, a shared purpose can turn a company, where daily work takes on a deeper meaning and satisfaction (Chappell 1993) CEO in USA
Achieving diversity is about bringing together a rich mix of people with different perspectives and from different backgrounds and creating and environment in which their differences are valued. A vibrant open and creative culture..... in which ideas flourish, where people thrive, grow and have fun. A culture where energy is released. • (Greenhalgh 1993 CEO Unilever)
Spiritual Intelligence • Builds in IQ and EQ.. • Zohar and Marshall (2000): SQ is what makes us uniquely human... what explains our thirst for meaning and purpose... what gives us an ultimate security upon which we can base our capacity to be innovative and creative... SQ drives our need for a shared vision and purpose...and tends to produce servant leaders with a capacity for innovative change
SQ • allows us to dream and to strive, • It underlies the things we believe in and the role our beliefs and values play in the actions we take and the shape we give to our lives
SQ & Spirituality in the workplace • Some basic principles of spirituality in the workplace (Barbara Taylor and Michael Anthony, Institute for Management Excellence) • Creativity * Energy • Respect * Flexibility • Vision * Communication • Partnership * Fun and the capacity to find and express oneself
They claim that these spiritual principles lie at the heart of what makes an organisation successful.... including being profitable
SQ and our spirituality influences us as people in our approach to others... it will counter-act any sense of drabness, and imbue us with a lightness of touch and a warmth of encounter that will enrich our professional lives. We are people first and professionals second- and the more whole and fulfilled we are as people, the better chance we have of being more effective professionals.
What spirituality can offer is a paradigm, or a way of seeing things, that can help us maintain and cherish the deep humanity of everyone we encounter • Hence its links to servant leadership
Activity • Work with a partner to explore together: In what ways does the concept of SQ and Spirituality help you to understand more clearly the values that underpin your work, your role in leadership and management, and how most effectively to respond to those who come to you for help treatment or support?
