  2. Discuss! • What does “determination” mean?! • Turn to your “elbow partner” (the person next to you) and talk with them about the question.

  3. Today’s Objectives By the end of class today, the students will be able to: • Understand the term “Self-Determination” • Explain the benefits of self-determination as it relates to life, work, school • Recognize and communicate their abilities

  6. What is Self-Determination? • Self-determination means that you know about yourself, your goals, and the supports you will need to reach your goals.

  7. Huh? • Basically… • You know your strengths/areas of improvement • You set goals • You know what will help you meet the goals

  9. Strengths and Challenges • We all have strengths and we all have challenges • We all learn differently • This is what makes us unique! • Visual learners/Auditory learners/Kinesthetic learners • Just because we learn differently doesn’t make us dumb, stupid, an idiot, etc.

Learning Disabilities • “A disorder, as dyslexia, usually affecting school-age children of normal or above-normal intelligence, characterized by difficulty in understanding or using spoken or written language, and thought to be related to impairment or slowed development of perceptual motor skills.” (Dictionary.com)

Emotional Disabilities • A condition exhibiting one or more of the following characteristics over a long period of time to a marked degree, which adversely affects educational performance: • An inability to learn which cannot be explained by intellectual, sensory, or health factors; • An inability to build of maintain satisfactory interpersonal relationships with peers and teachers; • Inappropriate types of behavior or feelings under normal circumstances; • A general pervasive mood of unhappiness or depression; or • A tendency to develop physical symptoms or fears associated with personal or school problems (Virginia Department of Education)

Intellectual Disabilities • “Intellectual disability is a disability characterized by significant limitations both in intellectual functioning (reasoning, learning, problem solving) and in adaptive behavior, which covers a range of everyday social and practical skills. This disability originates before the age of 18.” (American Association of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities)
