Summers, for the MICE Collaboration Departments of Physics and Astronomy University of Mississippi TOF1-TOF0 420 MeV/cp+ Cherenkov Radiation in HD Aerogel p simulatioonl KL response 300 MeV/c run TOF0 aerogel CKOV CKOV KL TOF1 Introduction TOF Beam Measurements CkOV Electron Response • MICE is a Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment running at • the Rutherford-Appleton Laboratory, Chilton UK. • Cooled muon beams will be a major technological step towards the development of a "neutrino factory" and "muon collider". • A minimum ionizing muon beam will be transversely cooled • by stages of -dE/dx in LH absorbers and longitudinal energy restoration in 201MHz RF cavities. • The 6D emittance reduction is measured before and after the cooling stage by tracking individual muons through the system. • Muon purity is assured by threeTime-of-Flight (TOF) measurements, two threshold Cherenkovs (, and a low energy muon/electron ranger KL/EMR (e. • TOFsystems tested at the Frascati test beam facility in ''07 and in place at MICE in '08. • to=55ps confirmed w good separation in preliminary commissioning stage. 5-6 pe per pmt X 4~24 pe BC420 BC404 KL/EMR • KL/EMR - electron preshower+rear muon ranger. (KLOE - Nucl.Instrum.Meth.A598:239-243,2009) • KL- preshower constructed of 0.3mmPb+BF12 fiber • ( 2.5 Xo, E=7%/ √E, t~70ps / √E ) • EMR-70cm active scintillator w WLS+MAPMT readout ( 58bars x4s0layers = 680mm, 2360 ch ) Time of Flight System Cherenkov Particle I.d. • TOF1,2,3 - Three time of flight stations (~40cmx40cm)are positioned in the MICE channel at the start (TOF0), mid(TOF1), and rear(TOFII) positions. • Each station consists of a 10X and 10Y array constructed of BC4404/420 scintillator bar assemblies with dual R4998 PMT (30ps) readout w modified high rate HV divider. Each assembly gives typically to=55ps timing resolution. • The expected TOF resolution between 2 stations is then • TOF2 ~ 2(to/√2)2 + 2L + 2cable + 2elec ≤ 70ps2 • CKOVab- Two threshold Cherenkov detectors positively identify muons from pions in the upstream MICE beamline. • High density aerogels of n=1.12 and n=1.07 were chosen with momentum thresholds for muon I.d. between 220-360 MeV/c. Electronics Summary • PID detectors being commissioned in MICE beamline. Initial results very promisng. • Full systems operational in '09 and '10.
