Part 1a: The Middle Ages Dates and Other Facts • 500 – 1500 • Middle Ages also known as “Medieval” • 3 classes of people: nobility, clergy, and peasants • The average peasant lived to be 30 years old and ate black bread and turnips.
Middle Ages Elements and Composers • Gregorian Chant – named after Pope Gregory the Great • Chant or plainsong is monophonic • Composed by anonymous monks • Written on a four line staff • Chanting made it easier for people to memorize their sacred texts and the Mass • Sung in Latin
Middle Ages Secular Music • Non-religious music • Minstrels traveled singing, telling stories, and performing tricks • Songs monophonic • Sung in common language • A few string and percussion instruments were used by the minstrels
