SEP 2.0 Multiple-Technology Integrated Test Configurations Greg Ennis Rolf Bienert Wi-Fi Alliance TUV Rheinland November 3, 2010
Overview • These slides came out of discussions regarding SEP 2.0 testing issues for the various SEP 2.0 MAC/PHYs • ZigBee, Wi-Fi, HomePlug • Mixed environment scenarios • These thoughts led to some issues regarding ESI certification • Complications related to multiplicity of possible communications interfaces • May be “out of scope”? But let’s discuss … • Specific examples are based on ZigBee/Wi-Fi mixed environment, but apply in general to other combinations among the MAC/PHYs
Wi-Fi ZigBee Example of a Mixed Environment EMS performs bridging between the two technologies
Basic Testing of End Device ZigBee Reference End Device & ESI Network ZigBee End Device ZigBee Interface Test Harness Simulating ESI Airwaves Wi-Fi Interface Wi-Fi End Device Wi-Fi Reference End Device & ESI Network Blue – conformance testing Green – Interop testing A Test Harness with both ZigBee and Wi-Fi interfaces can test bothkinds of end device (here an end device is the “device under test”).
Testing a Utility ESI? ZigBee & Wi-Fi Reference End Device Network ? ZigBee ESI ZigBee Interface UtilityHeadend Test Harness Simulating End Device(s) Airwaves Wi-Fi Interface ? Wi-Fi ESI One would hope to just flip the picture around to test an ESI … but an actual ESI has a second communications interface that must be “driven” by something
Testing a Utility ESI? ZigBee & Wi-Fi Reference End Device Network ZigBee ESI ZigBee Interface Test Harness Simulating Utility Headend Test Harness Simulating End Device(s) Airwaves Wi-Fi Interface Wi-Fi ESI To control the testing we would want to use a Test Harness that simulates a (generic?) utility headend
Multiple Physical Interfaces ZigBee & Wi-Fi Reference End Device Network ZigBee ESI ZigBee Interface Test Harness Simulating Utility Headend Test Harness Simulating End Device(s) 15.4g? WiMax?Cellular? Wi-Fi? PowerLine? Airwaves Wi-Fi Interface Wi-Fi ESI Even if we were to assume SEP 2.0 is running at the utility headend, there will be numerous different physical interfaces implemented.
Proposal • To make this problem manageable we could standardize on a single simple physical interface between the ESI-under-test and the utility-simulating test harness. This is for testing purposes only. • For now let’s assume this is Ethernet • Vendor of ESI-under-test would be responsible for providing this standard Ethernet interface to his ESI when submitting to a test lab for certification • This could be accomplished by providing a separate unit that acts as a transparent pass-through between ESI’s native interface and Ethernet • This is the vendor’s responsibility to provide when submitting the ESI for certification testing • Could be simply a laptop implementing both interfaces
ESI Interface Module Combination submitted byvendor to testlab for ESI certification testing Native physical interface ESI Interface Module Test Harness Simulating Utility Headend ESI-under-test Standard physical interface (e.g. Ethernet) • ESI Interface Module performs transparent passthrough • Could be simply a laptop computer supporting both interfaces
Incorporating an ESI Interface Module in order to test a Utility ESI ZigBee & Wi-Fi Reference End Device Network Native physical interface Test Harness Simulating Utility Headend Test Harness Simulating End Device(s) ESI Interface Module Airwaves ESI Under Test Standard physical interface (e.g. Ethernet)
Testing an Internet ESI • Same idea works for an ESI that attaches to the Internet • Vendor of ESI provides Ethernet interface (via ESI Interface Module) to allow connection to Test Harness that simulates an Internet-based service provider
Incorporating an ESI Interface Module in order to test an Internet ESI Native physical interface Test Harness Simulating Internet Service Provider Test Harness Simulating End Device(s) ESI Interface Module Airwaves ESI Under Test Standard physical interface (e.g. Ethernet)
Mixed Technology Testing • End devices and ESIs should be tested for proper operation within mixed environments • Requires a routing function within the test configuration • Interoperability testing: use actual End Devices and actual ESIs
