Early life: • Tiberius Claudius came from a prestigious background; father was a son of Augustus and his mother was a daughter of Mark Anthony • he was kept out of public eye because of a disability which has been diagnosed as cerebral palsy • his nephew, Caligula made him a senator in 37 AD
Claudius the Emperor: • he was appointed emperor after the murder of Caligula • he abolished treason trials, burned criminal records, and nullified Caligula’s legislation on the legacies of the emperor’s • he was constantly fearful and often allowed his wives and advisors to manipulate him • ironically enough, he is one of the only emperors to be credited with expansion; he conquered Britain in 40 AD
Claudius’ personal life: • he was married four times • his third wife, Messalina used him to eliminate her enemies and gain power; she was later executed for unfaithfulness and attempting to marry one of her lovers • in 49 AD Claudius married his nice Agrippina (his fourth wife) • Agrippina persuaded Claudius to adopt her son from a previous marriage, Lucius Domitius (who later became known as Nero) • Agrippina poisoned Claudius leaving Nero the heir to the empire Messalina Agrippina
