What do you want to say? • And to whom? • How often?
-Sound Reporting: The NPR guide to audio journalism and production Jonathan Kern, p. 31 “Whenever you write a sentence to say on the air, think about how you’d say an analogous sentence in your daily life, and adopt that more colloquial word order. That will often mean writing two shorter sentences to replace one long one.”
Who is your audience? • What motivates them? • Where do they get their information? • What is your audience's perception of you? • What is your message? • What do you want the audience to do? (i.e. attend a workshop, download an file?) www.ext.colostate.edu/comm/developcommplan.html
Once you’ve thought about these things, develop a series of program topics that you will present. Think about where you will get your source material: fact sheets are an excellent place to start! • Build the series logically • Example: planting to harvest and post-harvest handling (canning preserving, etc.)
Practice, (practice, practice) • Read aloud • Text that is written is different than spoken • Listen to yourself and critique • More inflections needed? Shorter sentences?
Equipment needs • High quality microphone • Mp3/wav recorder • Digital storage media • Quiet room
Recording • Quiet room • Shut the door • Stand up to keep diaphragm open • Work on your enunciation • Play it back • Re-record if necessary • (give yourself enough time)
Add-ons • Music • Use sparingly • Research has shown that music impedes learning • Natural sound • Can be nice background/bridge • Don’t overuse • ‘Actuality’ (interview clip) • Good quote can enhance the story
Keep it short! • Two minute maximum • Consider your audience and their needs/uses
