1950s: Technology • 1957 - FORTRAN introduced by IBM • 1957 - The IBM 7090 could perform almost 230,000 calculations/second • 1958 - 1st Tape Recorders for home use released • 1959 - Transistors were commonly replacing vacuum tubes in computers
1950s: Significant Events • 1950 - First credit card • 1950 - Erikson's Stages of Development • 1952 – TVs in the home • 1954 - Segregation ruled illegal in US • 1954 - Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs • 1954 – Portable radios • 1955 - Disneyland opened

1960s: Technology • 1962 – LED light invented • 1964 - IBM introduced first "family" of computers System/360 • 1969 - IBM began selling hardware and software separately

1960s: Connections • Space adventure and technology • Continued racial tensions • Religion in public schools • Vietnam and political turmoil • Hardware/software and systems suggests a shift towards consumer preference
1970s: Technology • 1970 - ARPAnetestablished • 1971 - e-book invented • 1971 - Introduction of the Floppy Disk • 1973 - First cellphone introduced • 1975 - Microsoft founded • 1976 - Apple I released • 1977 - VHS video tape recorders introduced
1970s: Significant Events • 1970 - Discovery-based teaching • 1973 - Legalization of Abortion • 1978 - 1st "test tube" baby born • 1978 - Landmark Surveillance Act made Law
1970s: Connections • Science and technology • Reproductive health • Advances in communication and entertainment
Conclusion • Technology • Made it easier to process, share, and store information and opened new communication channels • A lot of innovation came from the “scientists” and government. • Society • Drove the demand for technology and continues to do so in the increasingly consumer-driven technology market of today
