  2. Parenthood brings changes! • Dominique’s example • Parenthood  begins with having a child by birth/adoption

  3. Activity Write down your daily schedule for three days, including one weekend. Include all of your activities on the schedule. Now examine your schedule while imagining that you are now parents. How would you daily life change? What new activities would be added? What would you have to drop?

  4. New Responsibilities • Life-long commitment  child needs physical care, financial care, support, love and guidance into adulthood • First time parents can feel overwhelmed, however they do not have to go through it alone

  5. Changes in Lifestyle • Lots of time and energy needed • Limits placed on personal freedom • Couples are better able to adjust to changes if they prepare for them • Math activity: Calculate how much time a new parent might spend feeding an infant assuming that the baby is fed every 3 hours and each feeding lasts 45 minutes. How much time feeding a day? How much time is spent feeding a week?

  6. Changes in Lifestyle • Math activity answer: 6 hours a day, 42 hours a week

  7. Emotional Adjustments Parents often feel conflicting emotions such as: • Fear • Frustration • Worry over finances • Jealousy of the baby • Depression Activity: How can parents cope with these emotions and stress?

  8. Emotional Adjustments How to cope with conflicting emotions & stress: • Get a temporary caregiver once a week • Exercise • Share your feelings!

  9. Changes in Relationships Although the birth of a baby is wonderful, parents feel overwhelmed and may: • Bicker or fight • Changes in relationship between parents and grandparents. Parents may resent advice from grandparents

  10. Changes at Work • Working women  may quit work or cut back on hours • Overtime workers  less willing to put in extra hours • Companies have policies to help working parents

  11. The Rewards of Parenthood • Happiness, pride and love for parents • Having children can enrich a strong marriage • Sense of accomplishment

  12. Making Decisions about Parenthood • Emotional Maturity • Desire for Parenthood • Health Considerations • Financial Concerns • Management Skills

  13. Emotional Maturity • Responsibility • Being secure enough with attention • Are you equipped to handle the challenges of parenthood?

  14. Health Considerations • Prospective parents should get a checkup • Medical problems can affect person’s ability to care for child • Prospective mother’s age

  15. Financial Concerns • Raising a child is expensive! • Change way of life to prepare for these expenses • Will one spouse leave their work to care for baby? • Is child care an option?

  16. Management Skills • Set goals • Identify resources • Make a plan • Put the plan in action • Reevaluate from time to time

  17. Poster Assignment • Create a poster that illustrates the rewards and responsibilities of parenthood • Due Thursday!
