THE BODY’S RESPONSE IS LARGELY INVOLUNTARY, OR AUTOMATIC. IT HAPPENS IN THREE STAGES AND CAN OCCUR WHETHER THE STRESS IS PHYSICAL OR EMOTIONAL, POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE.
ALARM STAGE • Hypothalamus – small nerve center at the base of the brain – excited by the stressor. • Pituitary Gland – secrets a hormone called adrenaline. • “Fight or Flight” Response
RESISTANCE STAGE • Physical resistance to the stressor reaches it peak. • Accomplish incredible feats of strength. • The body functions at a higher-than-normal level.
FATIGUE STAGE • The body and mind become worn down. • Physical Fatigue • Pathological Fatigue • Psychological Fatigue
Reacting to our Emotions • Defense Mechanisms • What are Defense Mechanisms? • Strategies used to deal with strong or stressful emotions and situations. • How do we develop our defense mechanisms? • What are some of the common Defense Mechanisms?
Activity As a group (Table or Row) you will be given a defense mechanism or two. It is up to the group to discuss and rationalize an example of your given defense mechanism. Page 204 in your book will help you define your defense mechanisms so you can develop your example.
