  1. 20th Century British Poetry By Elizabeth Schlieper The 20th Century through the present is characterized by more pessimistic poetry and a more realistic perspective than was popular prior to the World Wars.

  2. 20th Century British Poetry Some examples of poets that typify the poetry of the 20th Century are Thomas Hardy, Robert Graves, W.H. Auden, and Seamus Heaney.

  3. 20th Century British Poetry Poets like Thomas Hardy and Robert Graves reflected the pessimistic attitudes of 20th Century poetry and are clearly a part of the movement toward pessimism and realism.

  4. 20th Century British Poetry Seamus Heaney is rather different in being more optimistic than most 20th Century poets. He was still reacting to the destruction in the world around him and this puts him among the 20th Century poets.

  5. Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Though wise men at their end know dark is right, Because their words had forked no lightning they Do not go gentle into that good night. Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, Do not go gentle into that good night. Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. And you, my father, there on the sad height, Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray. Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
