Gravity Mass and Weight
What is force? • A pull or push that causes an object to move, stop, or change speed or direction.
A force that pulls all objects toward each other. Acceleration due to gravity is 9.8m/s2. Gravity
Gravitational Force • Gravitational Force depends upon the mass of two objects and the distance between them.
Mass • The amount of material an object has.
Weight • A measure of the force of gravity on an object.
Weight • Your weight is a measure of the force of gravity between you and the Earth.
If you were on the moon, would your mass change or your weight? Weight will change, because it depends on gravity. The gravitational force of the moon is 1/6 that of earth. Mass and Weight http://www.edumedia-sciences.com/a222_l2-weight-mass-on-the-moon.html
Activity • Get in a group of two. • One of the group members, get your planner and your pencil. • Hold the planner and your pencil infront of you. • Your hands should be straight and at the same level. • The other member will determine which one will hit the floor first, the planner or the pencil. • Discuss your results.
Light and heavy objects fall at a same rate, because heavier objects also have greater inertia. The heavier object is pulled with a greater force, and it resist acceleration more strongly than the light object.
