General Rules about Engineering Logbooks… • In a log – (most often) simply report on the events as they occurred. • Don’t give judgments. Just record the facts. “My name’s Friday, and this is the city.” • Include enough information to “paint the whole picture”. All of the reader’s questions and concerns should be predicted and answered.

General Rules about Engineering Logbooks… • Report only on your personal observations and the facts of your work • Refrain from extreme commentary. Words and phases like - awful, unsafe, deadly, stupendous, breathtaking – typically have no place in engineering logbooks.

General Rules about Engineering Logbooks… • The word FAIL … …connotations for many people. Potentially, that’s a good way to start off on the wrong foot, so to speak, but of course this is the reader’s issue, not yours. • “Bad stuff” can be referred to as: event, occurrence, observation [that did not comply with the requirements] • Otherwise, be concise/accurate without pass/fail

General Rules about Engineering Logbooks… • Be balanced. Remove ambiguity. • Include an ending comment … “The test completed successfully” …to the point and informative. • Simple is better. Be complete but not wordy.
