The aim of my work: To compare the image of the hero in Russian and English traditional national confession as it is reflected in epos (studying “The legends of Robin Hood” and Russian byliny as an example).
Objectives: To get acquainted with Russian and English national epos studying byliny, the legend of Beowulf and the legends of Robin Hood. To find out which character traits are encouraged and which are discouraged by the national self-conscious (basing on the texts mentioned above). To describe the image of the hero in self-consciousness of the two countries To compare images of the hero in Russian and English self-consciousness, to reveal similarities and differences

National consciousness is a level of individual and public consciousness, a characteristic of the national unity, one of forms of expressing of originality of the nation and its representatives, caused by a unity of their origin. It is a product of socialization and a result of a person`s mastering culture, traditions and customs of the nation.
Bylina. is a traditional Russian oral epic narrative poem There are 3 main components in byliny: “One’s” own world (a state, a town, a family, etc) An enemy (invader) A hero (protector)
Scenes common to byliny: Include a hero taking leave of his mother Saddling a horse Entering a council chamber Bragging Beparting over the wall of a city Going on a journey Urging on his horse In battle, dressing in the morning exchanging taunts with an enemy becoming blood brothers with another hero Asking for mercy.
Themes in many byliny: The birth and childhood of a hero, Father and son fighting, Battling a monster, The imprisoned or reluctant hero returning in time to save his city, Matchmaking or bride taking, A husband arriving at the wedding of his wife Encounters with a sorceress who turns men into animals

Similarities. Each hero has to be strong. Hero has to be brave, confident and calm. Real hero doesn’t know what cowardice is. Hero thinks logically. He always need a plan. Each hero has got a special weapon. There is a special area in which hero lives and fight. Dwellers love and respect their hero (or heroes). Each hero has got his own team.
Differences. Beowulf and Russian bogatyres fight with monsters (such as Grendel) while Robin Hood is “robbing from the rich”. Beowulf and bogatyres do not hide from the dwellers. Robin Hood hides in the Sherwood forest. The aspects of heroes are different. (Russian bogatyr is middle-aged, broad-shouldered and serious. Robin Hood is young-looking, adroit, quick.) Differences in the areas of fights. (Robin Hood – Sherwood forest; Beowulf – Dane and the sea; Russian bogatyres – Kiev.)
Similar qualities: strength bravery confidence logics
Different qualities: Russian bylyny strongly disapprove robbery, whereas Robin Hood is a hero-robber.
Conclusion: I got: Improvement of my English Perspectives of the research: 1. Choose one hero of Russian epos and one hero of English epos and study their specific traits and the way they reflect national consciousness 2. Have a closer look at 2 target ballads 3. …
