STA Capability Sheet 12 PILE, PLATE, SUCTION, AND DRAG ANCHOR DESIGN AND ANALYSIS Stewart Technology Associates (STA) offers design services and specialized analytical tools for marine anchors of all types. STA has been at the forefront of anchor research for the last nine years. The computer program STA CHAIN, for calculating the geometry and tension distribution of the anchor chain in the sea bed, was developed for the US Navy in 1988. The computer program STA ANCHOR, for the prediction of drag anchor embedment and holding capacity, was first released in 1991. Programs STA PILE, and STA PULLOUT are for design of pile anchors and plate, or VLA (Vertically Loaded Anchors), respectively. The latest version of STA ANCHOR (released in 1995) has been calibrated for the new generation of VLAs. Collectively, these computer programs enable engineers to design and analyze a wide variety of anchor systems. Analytically it can be shown that conventional modern drag embedment anchors will resist large amounts of uplift in soft soils. This has been demonstrated with full scale and centrifuge tests. Although regulatory agencies are reluctant to accept conventional drag anchor designs which incorporate uplift at the sea bed, it has been demonstrated that such uplift is tolerable and, especially in deep water, enormous cost savings can result. STA ANCHOR contains a library of standard anchor sizes and detailed geometries. The program permits the user to edit these geometries and to specify the sea bed soil strength profile (which may be stepped). The maximum anchor capacity is predicted using a novel force-moment equilibrium method, accounting for geotechnical forces on both the anchor and the forerunner buried in the sea bed. The user may specify any uplift angle at the surface of the sea bed. STA PILE incorporates suction embedment calculations, as well as standard anchor pile design calculations for multi-layered soils. STA Capability Sheet 13 TANK DYNAMICS, SLOSHING & SEPARATORS Stewart Technology Associates (STA) is well known for dynamic analysis. STA can provide basic knowledge of fluid behavior in enclosed containers subject to dynamic excitation. Examples include partially filled pre-load tanks on jack-ups in punch-through situations, sloshing loads inside partially filled tanks in ships, three phase flow in separators, sloshing in separators on floating production vessels. Dynamic sloshing in ship tank with different baffles port and starboard. Sloshing mode shapes of rectangular tank using CFD – agreement with theoretical solutions. Three phase flow above, shows the volume fractions of gas, oil and water in a separator. Vertical baffles in a separator subject to vessel motions are shown to the lower left. They reduce water over-topping the weir, but significantly increase oil/water mixing up-stream of the weir. STA is researching improved anti-sloshing devices in separators using special vane technology patented by a partner company in the UK. This partner company is specialized in physical scale model testing of flows in separators. STA Capability Sheet 14 SINGLE POINT MOORING ANALYSIS Stewart Technology Associates (STA) offers design services and specialized analytical tools for Single Point Mooring (SPM) systems. The program STA SPM, running in the Microsoft Windows environment, is an initial screening tool for assessing tanker loads and fishtailing stability at SPMs. The first version of the program is static, while Version 2.0 will include dynamics of tanker motions in response to wave drift forces, first order wave motions, and wind gust spectra. Dynamic yaw (fishtailing) responses will also be modeled. STA SPM offers the user a selection of standard tanker sizes and allows the user to edit these sizes, if required. The user specifies the environment and the program automatically calculates wind, wave and current forces on the moored vessel for any angle of attack. An equilibrium condition is found in a few seconds, using iterative calculations, and displayed to the user, together with hawser tensions (or turret loads) and environmental loads on the vessel. Tandem tankers may be analyzed. STA designed the Lion Field CALM system now installed off the Ivory Coast. • For more detailed analysis of SPM systems, STA offers the AQWA suite of hydrodynamic software from WS Atkins, in the UK. AQWA, a 3-D diffraction/radiation program with time domain simulation, is the most widely used program in Europe for evaluating wave forces and motions of floating (and fixed) offshore structures. In the USA, the software is used by: • US Navy • Imodco • David Tein Consulting Eng. • AC McClure Associates • as well as by STA. • The Windows version of AQWA will be available in 1997, with many new features. Current features include: • 3-D Diffraction/radiation • Full added mass determination • Full radiation damping terms • Wave spectra • Wind spectra • Time & frequency domains • Interaction between vessels • Extreme (non-linear) waves • Coupled tether/structures • Coupled vessels • Natural frequency evaluations • Hydrostatic stability • Hydrodynamic stability • The AQWA suite is sold in modules. STA Capability Sheet 15 DOWNTIME ANALYSIS FOR DRILLING VESSELS STADOWN2 is a downtime analysis program developed for Chevron Petroleum Technology. It is extremely fast and easy to use. The program predicts the days per year of downtime for different drilling vessels based upon different drilling activities being limited by different vessel motions, or wind conditions. Twenty four, or more, activities involved in drilling and/or completing a well are defined by the user and a duration for each activity is specified. The user specifies limiting criteria criteria for each activity. Based upon the annual environmental joint probability statistics of wind and waves, together with vessel motion RAOs, as well as options for DP or spread moorings, the program computes the downtime for that specific geographic location and drilling vessel. Data for four vessels and one geographic location are contained in each copy of the program. The user can have multiple copies of the program with numerous different locations and vessels. Versions of the program can be customized for floating production operations, where vessel motions may cause production downtime, for example due to sloshing in production systems.
