  1. Safe Kids Are No Accident!

  2. Getting to and from school safely. . . . Pedestrian Safety Tips

  3. Cross the street only at the corners and in marked crosswalks.

  4. This sign marks a crosswalk.

  5. This is how the streets are painted in a crosswalk.

  6. Here is another example of a painted crosswalk.

  7. Some crosswalks have lights and others do not.

  8. This is not a crosswalk. Do not cross near parked cars.

  9. This is not a crosswalk.

  10. This is not a crosswalk. The moving cars may not see you.

  11. Do not cross the street until the light says it is your turn to cross.

  12. Some lights have a “hand” signal to indicate if it is safe to walk.

  13. If the “hand” light is flashing, you do not have time to start walking across.

  14. Look left, look right, and left again before crossing the street.

  15. Keep looking both ways as you cross.

  16. These signs are at many school crosswalks as a reminder to look before crossing.

  17. Before stepping out in front of a car, make sure the tires of the car have stopped moving.

  18. Remember that sometimes drivers want to stop but the road may be slippery. That is why you must make sure the tires are not moving and the driver sees you before you step out in the street.

  19. Be especially careful in the winter when the roads may be slippery and the driver can’t stop.

  20. You should also make eye contact with the driver so you know that they have seen you.

  21. Do not walk or run between two cars. A driver might not see you.

  22. Never run across the street. This decreases the chance that a driver will see you.

  23. Wear light colored clothing or a reflective device. This is very important as the days get darker in the winter time.

  24. Brightly colored clothing and backpacks makes it easier for drivers to see you during the day time.At night, reflective material on clothing helps drivers see you better (stickers). Some coats and backpacks come with reflective material sewn on them.

  25. If you have to run to get across the street, the car is too close for you to cross.

  26. Traffic signals help save lives!

  27. If you can cross at a corner that has a traffic signal, that is a good choice.

  28. When getting out of a car, get out on the grass side of the car. Do not go on the driver’s side which is the side of traffic flow.

  29. Always walk on the sidewalks and not on the road.

  30. Walk, not ride your bike to the bike rack on school property.

  31. You must walk your bike on school property not only for safety reasons but because it is a school rule.

  32. Older students should help younger students remember these rules to stay safe.

  33. Remind your parents if they forget a safety rule in the car or when walking.

  34. This safety information is provided for you by: A special thank you to the UND College of Nursing Students who have assisted with this presentation.
