Mission The mission of the Secretariat for Multidimensional Security (SMS) is to promote and coordinate cooperation among OAS member states and between them and the Inter-American system and other entities in the international system, in order to assess, prevent, confront, and respond effectively to threats to security, with a view to being the leading point of reference in the Hemisphere for developing cooperation and capacity-building in the OAS member states.

  4. ExecutiveOrder 16-01 Rev. 1 Executive Order (EO) 16-01 was issued in January 2016. Following a process of discussion with member states on July 19 of this year, EO 16-01 Rev. 1 was issued. Through this EO, the structure of the Secretariat for Multidimensional Security was redefined to ensure better planning and coordination and more effective management of knowledge, and to promote the evaluation of programs and projects. These two sections supplement the already established Administrative and Financial Section which, in accordance with this EO, are consolidated and will concentrate their work. The EO also created a new department, to counter the challenges posed by transnational organized crime. The existing departmental sections were restructured with a view to enhancing their effectiveness, but their basic functions remain the same.
