ABA BOARD 2005-2006 • President David H. Chestnut, MD • Vice-President Kenneth J. Tuman, MD • Secretary Steven C. Hall, MD • Treasurer Mark A. Warner, MD J. Jeffery Andrews, MD Orin F. Guidry, MD David L. Brown, MD Cynthia A. Lien, MD Douglas B. Coursin, MD Patricia A. Kapur, MD Glenn P. Gravlee,MD Mark A. Rockoff, MD
TOPICS • Communication with the ABA • Recent results • Training issues • Maintenance of Certification • Advocacy for new areas
Communicating with the ABA • ABA Website www.theABA.org • Booklet of Information (BOI) • ABA Office 4101 Lake Boone Trail, Suite 510 Raleigh, North Carolina 27607-7506 919-881-2570
Booklet of Information • Upon a motion duly made and seconded, the Board of Directors voted to list former Directors in the Booklet of Information without designating whether they are deceased.
TRAINING ISSUES • Reporting issues • Clinical competence report and substance abuse • Non-affiliated rotations • Resident vacation and leave time • Part time training
Reporting Changes • New questions on the CCC report • Academic Investigator track for the CA- 3 year has been eliminated • Pediatric anesthesiology programs will now enroll fellows • “Board eligible” is now “in the examination system”
Reporting Issues • Essential Attribute 5 - The resident “has no documented abuse of alcohol or illegal drugs during this reporting period’’’ • Program must report EA 5 as Unsatis- factory, even if this is discovered after the training period
OUTSIDE ROTATIONS • For a single, isolated outside rotation, the program must request approval 4 months before the rotation • If the rotation is likely to be frequently repeated, it is easier to affiliate the rotation (through RRC/ACGME) instead of repeatedly requesting approval (through ABA)
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS – RESIDENT ABSENCES • Clarification of intent of the “20 days per year” requirement • The total of any and all absences may not exceed 60 days during the Clinical Anesthesia 1-3 years of training • Allows aggregation of time off • One meeting for up to 5 days a year is education, not an absence from training
Part Time Training • The ABA has reiterated its position that residency training in anesthesiology should be full time • Exceptions will be made in accordance with ADA and FMLA regulations • Other exceptions must be prospectively obtained through the Credentials Committee of the ABA
Maintenance of Certification (MOCA) • Registration is now automatic • If you are a new diplomate, you are in MOCA (with your own web page) • No administrative fees; only an examination fee • MOCA for subspecialties is coming soon
Maintenance of Certification (MOCA) • Professional Standing • Lifelong Learning and Self- Assessment • Cognitive Expertise • Practice Performance Assessment
Professional Standing • State or province licensure is a requirement • If any of the licenses are revoked or severely restricted, ABA will evaluate circumstances • Evaluation of actions in 2004 have demonstrated a couple patterns
Professional Standing • A variety of causes of license revocation or severe restriction were found • They range from fraud to opioid diversion to repeated medical negligence to capital crimes • High frequency of two issues
Substance abuse problems that interfered with appropriate clinical practice • A higher incidence of problems in diplomates practicing pain medicine
ABA and Other Boards • ABA has offered to cosponsor two new subspecialty boards • Hospice and Palliative Medicine • Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine
Foreign-Certified Anesthesiologists • Currently under consideration
Confidentiality Warning • The ABA and its staff will never ask you to mail or fax a list of your residents • If you are solicited for such a list, please collect the caller’s name, phone number and fax number and email this to: John.markey@theABA.org
Foreign Certified Anesthesiologists • We’re working on this • Thanks for your input
