Transitive Verbs: Directs the action to a receiver of the action Example: The captain rang the bell. (what “rang” – the bell) The receiver of the action is a noun or pronoun Intransitive Verbs: Expresses action about the subject of the sentence but does not direct the action towards another noun/pronoun. Example: The captain rang for dinner. There is no receiver of the action. Action Verbs

Linking Verb • Connects a noun or pronoun with a word which describes or renames that noun or pronoun • Example: The Sahara is a desert. The desert feels sweltering. List of Linking Verbs: is, am, are, was, were, be, being, been, appears, becomes, feels, grows, looks, remains, seems, smells, sounds, stays, tastes, turns
Helping Verbs • A verb or verbs added to the main verb to form a verb phrase • May be separated by another word such as not, never, hardly, seldom….
