Parents paying big bucks to prepare kids for tests COLUMBUS (AP) - Parents increasingly stressed about their children's ability to get into a good college are forking over big bucks to companies that prepare students for standardized tests. Business is booming for companies like Sylvan Learning Center, Kaplan Inc. and Huntington Learning Centers. The College Board, which administers the SAT, says 98% of students do some kind of test preparation. "Parents are looking for a leg up for their children, who now see tutoring as more acceptable rather than punitive," said Steven Pines, executive director of the Education Industry Association. "Tutoring companies have become more skilled at marketing, prices are more competitive, and an improving economy is providing parents with more disposable income to pay for services." Two-thirds of education service providers expect revenues to increase more 25 percent this year, said Pines, whose association represents private providers of education services… For those favoring a more personal approach, individual tutoring at centers like Sylvan can run parents between $30 and $80 per hour, Pines said. "I like coming here because you get smarter when you do," said 9 year old Emily Kleinhenz as she studied analogies at the Sylvan center in Delaware, a Columbus suburb. "On my last report card, I got four A's because I learned so much here.“ July 2005 On the World Wide Web: http://www.infohio.org
