  2. TALKING ABOUT THAI FOOD Taking foreign tourists to a Thai restaurant. Tourist : There are many dishes to choose from the menu. I don’t know what to choose for the main course. Guide : Wall, we do not have the starter and the main course as you have in a European meal. A Thai meal is based on rice, which is served with a variety of dishes, called ‘kap-kao’.

  3. TALKING ABOUT THAI FOOD

  4. Tourist : Really? And what does ‘kap-kao’ really mean? Guide : ‘Kap Kao’ may be literally translated as ‘with’ the rice! This is because a plate of rice must be accompanied with at least a dish of ‘hap kao’.

  5. Tourist : How interesting! And how many dishes of ‘kap kao’ are served each time? Guide : It depends. In most Thai families tow three dishes of ‘kap kao’ are served with the rice is limited only by the cook’s time, patience, budget or imagination.
