  1. Inspirational Supervision Presented by: Blair Coombs Chika Ibelo Rosa Medeiros Rose-Desiree ZeMeka SlinderBalaggan

  2. Inspiration it’s all about the relationship Employee orientation is a unique opportunity to inspire new employees. Orientation ought to be less about the company and more about the individual’s identity (Cable et al, 2013).

  3. Getting to know each other

  4. Scene 1: the initial encounter Disorientation

  5. Disorientation • Ms. Van Pelt: And you sir, are? • Mr. Brown: Charlie Brown • Ms. Van Pelt: IT? • Ms. Van Pelt: No, I am a new employee and this is my first day! • Ms. Van Pelt: New employee? Oh, right. I am Ms. Van Pelt and I will be your supervisor. Right now (looking at her watch) I am in the middle of something, but let me give you some policies and organizational charts for your review to help bring you up to speed. Let me show you where your office is. • Mr. Brown: Okay, but, ah … • Ms. Van Pelt: Here is your office. Don’t worry about the computer hook up. You won’t need that for a few days. We have a team meeting at 2:00, so you can meet everyone then. Please don’t be late. Oh, to get to the washroom, just go down the hall, take your 2nd left, 3rd right, and 4th left. I cannot answer any of your questions right now, but will later. I need to finish a proposal due today! • Mr. Brown: Thanks, I think • Mr. Brown (thinking): Is this really where I want to be?

  6. Inspiration it’s about establishing the right priorities “ The ability to establish and maintain the supervision relationship is a core requirement of supervision.” - Beddoe ( 2010)

  7. Inspiration it’s about connecting the dots Simon Sinek is clear that those with a “strong sense of why inspire people” • Why – Vision (purpose/cause/belief) • How – Actions taken to realize the vision: mission (values & guiding principles) • What - Outcome

  8. Inspiration it’s about building a contract • Establish a rapport. It’s a conversation. Get to know one another (Davys and Beddoe, 2010).  • Develop a mutual understanding of what supervision means and create a plan to meet mutual expectations.

  9. Scene 1, Take 2: the initial encounter

  10. Orientation • Ms. Van Pelt: Hi, you must be Mr. Brown, our newest team member. Welcome. We are delighted to have you here. • Mr. Brown: Thank you. I am really excited to start, Ms. Van Pelt. • Ms. Van Pelt: Please call me Lucy. I will be your supervisor and I am looking forward to working with you. Before I take you on a tour of the building and to meet everyone, let’s have a chat. • Mr. Brown: Sounds great! • Ms. Van Pelt: Here at Community Connections, we are deeply committed to our vision of Inclusion for everyone. We feel that your talents and experience will be an asset to our organization and help us achieve our vision. Here, we work as a team and are supportive of each other. Please stop me at any time if you have any questions. • Mr. Brown: Sure. Do you have a policy and procedure manual? • Ms. Van Pelt: As with many organizations, we have a policy and procedure manual that is about as long as your arm. I don’t want to overwhelm you with it right now so I will point out the most important parts for you to review to get you started. Please pay particular attention to the policy on supervision. There is no pressure to know everything, as you have plenty of time to learn. Learning is an ongoing process in our organization.

  11. orientation • Ms. Van Pelt: How are you feeling? A little overwhelmed? • Mr. Brown: I’m doing great, thanks! • Ms. Van Pelt: Supervision is a big part of what we do. Tell me a little about your previous supervisory experiences and what worked well for you. I believe that supervision not only helps us achieve the vision, mission, and goals of the organization, but helps us develop and grow professionally and personally. My style is to give supervisees the space to do their job, but to provide support as needed. How does this sound to you? • Mr. Brown: Sounds fantastic, I can’t wait to start. • Ms. Van Pelt: Keep in mind Charlie, we are all in this together and no one should feel as though they are working in a “vacuum,” which would really suck! Pardon the pun. • Mr. Brown: All those social work assignments and all-nighters have surely paid off. (thinking) • Ms. Van Pelt: Tell me about your previous experiences of supervision and little bit about yourself. THE BEGINNING OF A GREAT CONVERSATION...

  12. Inspiration it’s about opportunities • Supervision is an opportunity to bring someone back to their own mind, to show them how good they can be. • Nancy Kline, ‘Time to Think’

  13. Supervision Inspiration Leading is about relationships vs power/coercion Outcomes Increased engagement Increased productivity Retention Change vs compliance Increased efficiency Follows because they want to not because they have to • Inspire others to act • Inspire others to see the bigger picture • Have confidence and believe in them – trust • Include and value them • Always encourage, acknowledge, recognize • Communicate openly and often

  14. Inspirational Supervision “We need to work together, because daily we are overwhelmed by problems we can’t solve alone […] recognize that no one person or leader has the answer...we need everybody’s creativity [...] We are our only hope for creating a future worth working for…” (Wheatley, 2007, p. 57).
