  2. Breaking Apart Mental math method used to rewrite a number as the sum of numbers to form an easier problem. 135 + 48= 183 135 + 5 + 43 = 183

  3. Compensation Choosing numbers close to the numbers in a problem, and then adjusting the answer to compensate for the numbers chosen. 135 + 48 = 183 135 + 50 = 185 I added 2 too many so I will subtract 2. 185 – 2 = 183

  4. Counting on Counting up from the smaller number to find the difference of two numbers 400 – 165 165 + 5 = 170 5 + 30 + 200= 235 170 + 30 = 200 200 + 200 = 400

  5. COMmutative property of addition Numbers can be added in any order and the sum remains the same. 20 + 13 = 13 + 20

  6. ASSOCIATIVE PROPERTYOF ADDITION Addends can be regrouped and the sum remains the same. (20 + 13) + 5 = 20 + (13 + 5)

  7. IDENTITY PROPERTYOF ADDITION The sum of any number and zero is that number. 12 + 0 = 12 86 + 0 = 86

  8. INVERSE OPERATIONS Operations that undo each other. 3 + 5 = 8 8 – 5 = 3
