Portugal began the Age of Exploration • Who was the Prince who started the Navigation School in Portugal? • Who was the Portuguese explorer who found a route from Portugal to the tip of Africa? • Vasco da Gama- Portuguese explorer who found a sea route from Portugal to India • Pedro Cabral –Portuguese explorer blown off course and landed in current day Brazil
Spain wanted to compete with Portugal • King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain sent out Christopher Columbus to find a sea route to Asia • 1492- Columbus sailed with three ships: Nina, Pinta, & Santa Maria • Landed in Bahamas in Caribbean Sea • Eventually made four voyages to the New World • What did Columbus find? • Indigenous people (Mayans) were highly developed society completely isolated from Europe
Spain & Portugal both want to trade with Asia • Line of Demarcation: Pope negotiates a deal between Spain and Portugal to split the world between the two of them. • Treaty of Tordesillas- 1494- Portugal was unhappy with the Pope’s Line of Demarcation and negotiated to move the line west so that Portugal would have current day Brazil

More Spanish Explorers after Columbus • Vasco Balboa- Spanish explorer in Central America who saw the Pacific Ocean from the Western Hemisphere • Ferdinand Magellan- Spanish Explorer- his crew was the first European to circumnavigate the globe (go around the world) • Had to cross the Atlantic then took a month to get through the Straits of Magellan at the southern tip of South America • Magellan got into a fight with natives in Philippines and was killed • His crew continued home to Spain- 18 of the original 250 crew members survived the three year voyage • Amerigo Vespucci- Italian who sailed on Spanish ships-his notes were entertaining and a mapmaker used his name to label the new continents of North and South America
Other Countries began ExploringSearch for a Northwest Passage-sea route across North America • France sent out explorers to find Northwest Passage • Jacques Cartier- French Explorer who sailed to Canada and St. Lawrence river • Samuel de Champlain- French Explorer who returned to Canada and explored Great Lakes and founded city of Quebec • England sent out explorers to find Northwest Passage • Henry Hudson- English explorer who sailed to present day New York • No one ever found a Northwest Passage, but voyages did spark interest in more explorations
