Honor Court: Student Board of Ethical Relations Rebecca Laube, Hannah Pennington, Caitlin Parsley, Justin Padgett, and Devin Perry **All information is found in AUCVM Student Code of Professional Ethics
Purpose of Honor Court • To promote ethical standards of the veterinary profession and to institute peer governance and accountibility • Failure to follow the code will lead to the Honor Court to consider violations of the Code and recommend disciplinary measures in case of a violation • This is the main disciplinary method regarding Code violations and teachers will recommend using this process if there is a concern • The Code promotes ethical standards of personal conduct • Failure of following the code includes: • Conduct on or off campus • Social networks • Using old exams • Cheating • Knowing of a violation and not reporting it! • Etc. • We all represent the Veterinary Professionand we should try to preserve the integrity of the profession
Reporting an Incident • Witness of the Code violation should describe in writing • This letter will be used if it proceeds to a hearing • This should be a formal letter with the witness’s signature • We cannot accept anonymous letters • Submit to the Clerk or Chancellor • Please NOT to the class justices because then we can’t do our job if it goes to a hearing • Lauren Robinson – Chancellor ler0007@tigermail.auburn.edu • Joanna Lianos – Clerk lianoie@tigermail.auburn.edu • **** This changes on February 15th, We will let you know who the new Chancellor and Clerk are****
Our Role as Your Justices • We are NOT here to police the class • We are just a group of your PEERS (like a pre-selected jury) • Consider code violations • Determine guilt or innocence • Decide disciplinary actions • Form the Ad Hoc Committee
Review the Allegations • Three justices form an Ad Hoc committee • Gather evidence • Speak with witnesses and the accuser • Decide if there is enough evidence for a hearing If No- Destroy the evidence gathered and no further action occurs If yes- Inform the Chancellor and hand over ALL the evidence and proceed to a hearing. Evidence
Hearing • People involved • 2 Justices from each class • An alternate justice from the class of the accused • Clerk • Chancellor • Faculty Advisors- only present for advice • Accuser • Accused • Any witnesses for either accused or accuser
Hearing Cont. • Disciplinary actions can be: • Reprimand- letter that goes in your permanent record • Probation- required to resign from any club positions held, and any guilty violation while on probation will lead to expulsion • Suspension- leave school for a period based on the ruling of the board • Expulsion- student is not allowed to return to school for two years, after which they may reapply • *Restitution- if property loss was involved, then value replacement is required • *Counseling * May be combined with other disciplinary actions
Key Points • Write a formal letter explaining the violation • This is the toughest part! • However, this process has been reviewed/challenged by US court system and any ruling that has been made with this process has been up-held. • Report to Clerk or Chancellor • Not the class justices • Reviewed by an Ad Hoc Committee to decide if there is enough evidence to go to a hearing • Hearing to determine guilt and the repercussions of violation * CONFIDENTIALITY is and should be maintained throughout the entire process
